This paper presents the results of an experimental study that focuses on the tip leakage/vortex control of a model horizontal axis wind turbine rotor. The effects of Mie vanes and tip injection on the performance and wake characteristics of a model horizontal axis wind turbine rotor are investigated through experiments that are conducted by placing a specially designed three-bladed horizontal axis wind turbine rotor at the exit of an open-jet wind tunnel facility. The rotor blades are non-linearly twisted and tapered with NREL S826 airfoil profile all along the span. The measurements include power and thrust coefficient variations with Tip Speed Ratio (TSR) as well as wake flow field measurements at different axial locations downstream of the turbine rotor. Results show that both techniques significantly influence the power and thrust coefficient variations especially near the TSR ranges where CP is maximum. Mie-vanes reduce the strength of the tip vortex and hence reduce the associated turbulence intensity levels within the tip vortex dominated region inside the wake. Tip injection on the other hand introduce higher turbulence levels because of the strong turbulent jet injected from the blade tips. It’s expected that this higher turbulence levels could contribute to the faster diffusion of the tip vortices within the wake downstream of the turbine rotor.

Effects of tip injection on the performance and near wake characteristics of a model wind turbine rotor
Abdulrahim, Anas; Anik, Ezgi; Ostovan, Yashar; Uzol, Oğuz (2016-04-01)
This paper presents an investigation of the effects of tip injection on the performance and near wake characteristics of a model wind turbine rotor. Experiments are conducted by placing a three-bladed horizontal axis wind turbine rotor at the exit of an open-jet wind tunnel. The rotor blades are non linearly twisted and tapered with NREL 5826 airfoil profile. The nacelle, hub and the blades are specifically designed to allow pressurized air to pass through and get injected from the blade tips while the roto...
Effect of steady and transient wind shear on the wake structure and performance of a horizontal axis wind turbine rotor
SEZER UZOL, NİLAY; Uzol, Oğuz (2013-01-01)
This paper presents an investigation of the effect of steady and transient free-stream wind shear on the wake structure and performance characteristics of a horizontal axis wind turbine rotor. A new three-dimensional unsteady vortex-panel method potential flow solver based on a free-vortex wake methodology, AeroSIM+, is used for this purpose. The code is validated using the experimental data from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory Unsteady Aerodynamics Experiments. The effects of vortex core model, co...
Genetic algorithm based aerodynamic shape optimization of wind turbine rotor blades using a 2-d panel method with a boundary layer solver
Polat, Özge; Tuncer, İsmail Hakkı; Sezer Uzol, Nilay; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2011)
This thesis presents an aerodynamic shape optimization methodology for rotor blades of horizontal axis wind turbines. Genetic Algorithm and Blade Element Momentum Theory are implemented in order to find maximum power production at a specific wind speed, rotor speed and rotor diameter. The potential flow solver, XFOIL, provides viscous aerodynamic data of the airfoils. Optimization variables are selected as the sectional chord length, the sectional twist and the blade profiles at root, mid and tip regions of...
AMBIENT TURBULENCE INTENSITY EFFECTS ON THE CHARACTERISTICS OF WAKE DEVELOPMENT OF A MODEL WIND TURBINE AND A MATCHED POROUS DISC
Öztürk, Buğrahan; Uzol, Oğuz; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2022-9-1)
This thesis study aims to observe the ambient turbulence intensity effects on the wake development of a model wind turbine and a matched porous disc. Comprehensive wind tunnel experiments are conducted in the wake of the model wind turbine and the porous disc up to 7 diameters downstream through two-dimensional two-component particle velocimetry. The wakes of the model wind turbine and the porous disc are investigated in terms of the mean flow field, turbulence, wake decay, and wake spreading characteristic...
ON THE EFFECTS OF INFLOW CONDITIONS ON THE WAKE OF WIND TURBINE MODELS AND POROUS DISCS
Hassanein, Abdelrahman Hisham Ahmed Sabri; Perçin, Mustafa; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2023-1-18)
The study investigates the effect of two inflow conditions on the wake of a model wind turbine, namely, homogenous isotropic turbulence intensity and streamwise gust. For the effect of the freestream turbulence intensity, the wake of a porous disc with a comparable thrust coefficient was used to further highlight the differences in their wakes and decay characteristics. Results show that the wake of a wind turbine model has a faster decay rate than porous discs under both freestream turbulence intensities. ...
