Pervaporation of ethanol/water mixtures by zeolite A membranes synthesized in batch and flow systems
Arıcan Yüksel, Berna; Çulfaz, Ali; Kalıpçılar, Halil; Department of Chemical Engineering (2011)
Zeolite A membranes have great potential in pervaporation separation of ethanol/water mixtures with high flux and selectivity. Zeolite membranes usually synthesized from hydrogels in batch systems. In recent years, zeolite membranes are prepared in semicontinuous, continuous and recirculating flow systems to allow the synthesis of zeolite membranes with enlarged surface areas and to overcome the limitations of batch system at industrial level production. The purpose of this study is to develop a synthesis m...
PERMEABILITY OF PHEMA MEMBRANES PREPARED BY PHOTOINITIATION
ARICA, MY; Hasırcı, Vasıf Nejat (1993-01-01)
Poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) membranes were prepared in aqueous media with different ions and ionic strengths. The enzyme glucose oxidase was incorporated into some of these membranes. It was found that membrane water contents and ionic strengths have a linear relationship as long as the salt is not changed. When the salt was varied, only a relationship between salt concentration and water content could be observed. The membrane permeabilities were all found to be of the same order (10(-8) cm2 s-1) but...
Pervaporation of organic/water mixtures by MFI type zeolite membranes synthesized in a flow system
Dede, Özlem; Kalıpçılar, Halil; Department of Chemical Engineering (2007)
Zeolite membrane synthesis is conventionally carried out in batch systems. Recently, several attempts have been performed to synthesize zeolite membranes in flow systems which can allow preparation of membranes with large specific surface areas. Membranes synthesized in the recirculating flow system had comparable N2/SF6 and n- C4H10/i-C4H10 ideal selectivities with the membranes prepared in the batch system, indicating that good quality membranes can be produced by this method. The objective of this study ...
Peroxidation of membrane lipids in minimally processed cucumbers packaged under modified atmospheres
Karakaş, Barçın; Yıldız, Fatih; Department of Food Engineering (2002)
Peroxidation of membrane lipids is an inherent feature of ripening and senescence of plant tissues. Increased lipid peroxidation has also been observed in the development of chilling injury in susceptible tissues. In this study, the effect of storage conditions and physical tissue damage on membrane peroxidation of minimally processed cucumber (Cucumis sativus, L.) was investigated. Model modified atmospheres were achieved passively by storage of the minimally processed cucumbers at 4°C and 20°C in hermetic...
Peroxidation of membrane lipids in minimally processed cucumbers packaged under modified atmospheres
Karakas, Barcin; Yıldız, Fatih (Elsevier BV, 2007-01-01)
The effect of storage conditions and physical tissue damage on membrane peroxidation in minimally processed cucumber tissue was investigated. Lipid peroxidation in samples stored under modified atmospheric packaging (MAP) and in covered Petri dishes (non-MAP) were determined by the FOX2 and TBARS assays. The initial level of lipid hydroperoxides and TBARS were found as 1.44-2.00 and 0.11-0.20 nmol/g, respectively. The levels of lipid hydroperoxides increased by five- to sixfold in chilled non-MAP tissues ov...
