Carbon fiber-reinforced polymers based on polystyrene matrix containing elastomer and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were produced by compression molding. The effects of carbon fabric (CF) concentration and silane treatment on the morphology, mechanical, electrical, and shape memory properties of the multilayer composites were investigated. The SEM analyses showed that fibers of the silane-treated CFs were more homogeneously covered with the polymer layers than the untreated CFs. The tensile strength and modulus of the composites increased by 521% and 125%, respectively, with an increasing number of CF plies from one to five. Upon silane treatment, the tensile strength of the multilayer composite improved by 26%, and the tensile modulus decreased by 18.4%. Electrical conductivities of the composites were in the semiconductor region due to the presence of both CNTs and CFs. 100% shape recovery less than a minute recovery time was obtained for all the composites with electrically triggered bending test.

Improvement of PEMFC performance with Nafion/inorganic nanocomposite membrane electrode assembly prepared by ultrasonic coating technique
Devrim, Yilser; Erkan, Serdar; BAÇ, NURCAN; Eroğlu, İnci (2012-11-01)
electrode assemblies with Nafion/nanosize titanium silicon dioxide (TiSiO4) composite membranes were manufactured with a novel ultrasonic-spray technique and tested in proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). Nafion/TiO2 and Nafion/SiO2 nanocomposite membranes were also fabricated by the same technique and their characteristics and performances in PEMFC were compared with Nafion/TiSiO4 mixed oxide membrane. The composite membranes have been characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron m...
Computational modelling of carbon nanotube reinforced polymer composites
Zuberi, Muhammad Jibran Shahzad; Esat, Volkan; Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2014-7)
This thesis investigates the effects of chirality and size of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) on the mechanical properties of both SWNTs and carbon nanotube reinforced epoxy composites (CNTRPs). First, a novel 3D beam element finite element model is developed based on equivalent-continuum mechanics approach and used for replacing C-C chemical bond for modelling SWNTs. The effects of diameter and chirality on the Young’s moduli, shear moduli, shear strains and Poisson’s ratios of SWNTs are studied. Fo...
Studies on the modification of interphase/interfaces by use of plasma in certain polymer composite systems
Akovali, G; Dilsiz, N (Wiley, 1996-04-01)
Calcium carbonate and carbon fiber surfaces were modified by use of a series of plasma polymers at different selected plasma conditions, and the effect of surface modification, mainly on the mechanical properties of composite systems prepared, was investigated. The matrices for the composite systems employed were polypropylene and epoxy, for the chalk and C fiber, respectively. Mechanical and thermal studies and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) pictures revealed that inclusion surfaces, being independent ...
Simulation of crystallization and glass formation processes for binary Pd-Ag metal alloys
Kart, HH; Uludogan, M; Cagin, T; Tomak, Mehmet (2003-09-12)
Glass formation and crystallization process of Pd-Ag metallic alloys are investigated by means of molecular dynamics simulation. This simulation uses the quantum Sutton-Chen (Q-SC) potential to study structural and transport properties of Pd-Ag alloys. Cooling rates and concentration effects on the glass formation and crystallization of binary alloys considered in this work are investigated. Pd-Ag alloys show the glass structure at fast cooling rates while it crystallizes at slow cooling rates. Increment of...
Experimental investigation of the effect of CNT addition on the strength of CFRP curved composite beams
Arca, M.A.; Uyar, I.; Çöker, Demirkan (2015-01-01)
Carbon nanotubes (CNT) have been attracting attention as a toughening material in composite matrix due to their excellent mechanical properties. However, superior properties of CNTs have not yet been realized in the strengthening of composites against fracture. This study focuses on investigating the effect of CNT variation in the epoxy resin on the strength of curved composite beams. Specimens are [0/90] fabric carbon/epoxy composite laminates manufactured by hand layup technique 3 % wt CNT fractions in th...
