Notch and Wnt are highly conserved signalling pathways that are used repeatedly throughout animal development to generate a diverse array of cell types. However, they often have opposing effects on cell-fate decisions with each pathway promoting an alternate outcome. Commonly, a cell receiving both signals exhibits only Wnt pathway activity. This suggests that Wnt inhibits Notch activity to promote a Wnt-ON/Notch-OFF output; but what might underpin this Notch regulation is not understood. Here, we show that Wnt acts via Dishevelled to inhibit Notch signalling, and that this crosstalk regulates cell-fate specification in vivo during Xenopus development. Mechanistically, Dishevelled binds and directly inhibits CSL transcription factors downstream of Notch receptors, reducing their activity. Furthermore, our data suggest that this crosstalk mechanism is conserved between vertebrate and invertebrate homologues. Thus, we identify a dual function for Dishevelled as an inhibitor of Notch signalling and an activator of the Wnt pathway that sharpens the distinction between opposing Wnt and Notch responses, allowing for robust cell-fate decisions.

Object-based classification of landforms based on their local geometry and geomorphometric context
Gerçek, Deniz; Toprak, Vedat; Department of Geodetic and Geographical Information Technologies (2010)
Terrain as a continuum can be categorized into landform units that exhibit common physiological and morphological characteristics which might serve as a boundary condition for a wide range of application domains. However, heterogeneous views, definitions and applications on landforms yield inconsistent and incompatible nomenclature that lack interoperability. Yet, there is still room for developing methods for establishing a formal background for general type of classification models to provide different di...
Behavior of neuro-2A cells on femtosecond laser structured silicon substrates
Mingu, Sara; Bek, Alpan; Department of Micro and Nanotechnology (2020)
Cells are known to interact with their physical environment and respond to cues such as substrate topography. Knowledge of the cell responses to topography may give information about cell behavior in health and disease, as well as be exploited in order to exert control on cells for various purposes. Cell responses to topography are dependent on cell type, substrate material and topographical features. In the present study, Neuro-2a cell line was used as a versatile and widely available neuronal cell model. ...
Risky business: The combined effects of fishing and changes in primary productivity on fish communities

There is an increasing need to understand ecosystem responses to multiple stressors in that such complex responses depend not only on species-level responses, but also on species interactions and ecosystem structure. In this study, we used a multi-model ecosystem simulation approach to explore the combined effects of fishing and primary productivity on different components of the food-web across a suite of ecosystems and a range of model types. Simulations were carried out under different levels of primary ...
SPEED PERCEPTION IN MULTISENSORY PROFILES: WHAT IS THE EFFECT OF ATTENTION?
Kavaklıoğlu, Efsun; Özge, Umut; Kafalıgönül, Hulusi; Department of Bioinformatics (2022-2-7)
Multisensory processing and crossmodal interactions in the temporal domain are crucial for survival in a dynamic environment. Temporal ventriloquism illusion demonstrates the importance of the crossmodal interactions in the temporal domain and the influences of the auditory signals (e.g., auditory time intervals) on visual perception. Attention is another mechanism playing a critical role in sensory processing, and it allows us to prioritize relevant information in the visual field. Previous studies have sh...
Comparing Clustering Techniques for Real Microarray Data
Purutçuoğlu Gazi, Vilda (2012-08-29)
The clustering of genes detected as significant or differentially expressed provides useful information to biologists about functions and functional relationship of genes. There are variant types of clustering methods that can be applied in genomic data. These are mainly divided into the two groups, namely, hierarchical and partitional methods. In this paper, as the novelty, we perform a detailed clustering analysis for the recently collected boron microarray dataset to investigate biologically more interes...
