Mixed oxides, alpha-Fe2O3/Bi2WO6, were prepared using a mechanical mixing procedure by adding to the Bi2WO6 previously obtained by hydrothermal method the corresponding amount of a prepared alpha-Fe2O3, the latter obtained by thermal decomposition of Fe(NO3)center dot 9H(2)O. The physicochemical surface, structural, morphological characteristics and optical properties of the samples, single and mixed, were determined by BET, XRD, FE-SEM, XPS and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra showed that incorporating a 5%wt. of alpha-Fe2O3 to the corresponding amount of Bi2WO6 sample broadened the visible light absorption of Bi2WO6 as expected. The photocatalytic activity, of single and mixed catalysts, to degrade a selected dye such as Methyl Orange (MO) as well as the transparent substrate Phenol (Ph) was studied, in aqueous medium (pH 5.5) under UV and sun-like illumination conditions in the absence and presence of H2O2. In the present study the use of a alpha-Fe2O3/Bi2WO6/H2O2 system demonstrate much higher photocatalytic efficiency to degrade both MO and Ph than pristine Bi2WO6 or alpha-Fe2O3, single or mixed. Using the system alpha-Fe2O3/Bi2WO6/H2O2, around 85% of MO was degraded in 60 min under sun-like illumination whereas 100% was degraded in 60 min under UV-illumination. However, just around 30% of Ph was degraded in 120 min in the alpha-Fe2O3/Bi2WO6/H2O2 system under sun-like illumination whereas around a 95% was degraded in 90 min under UV-illumination. Under UV illumination, the generation of hydroxyl radicals is favorable; whereas under sun-like illumination, only the small fraction of the UV can produces the center dot OH. Under illumination, the H2O2 could react with photoinduced electrons from the photocatalysts leading to the production of hydroxyl radicals (center dot OH). (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. Simultaneous determination of Cd and Zn by fluorescence spectrometry using a novel reagent and surfactants
Ertas, N; Akkaya, EU; Ataman, Osman Yavuz (1997-01-01)
A method for the simultaneous determination of zinc and cadmium with the chelating ligand 9-(1',4',7',10'-Tetraazacyclododecyl)methylanthracene using spectrofluorimetry is described. Effect of experimental variables on fluorescence intensities and on the spectral behavior of the metal-ligand in several types of surfactants have been studied, The range of application is between 2.0 and 35 mu g/L for both zinc and cadmium. The method has been applied to the determination of zinc and cadmium in real leachate s...

The geometries of the low-lying isomers of phosphorus P2 to P10 were calculated using the semiempirical modified neglect of diatomic overlap method. It was found that, in those cases (P2 and P4) where spectroscopic data are available, the bond strengths are overestimated. The binding energies were found to be underestimated in those cases (P2, P3 and P4) where thermodynamically derived values for the gas phase are available. A roof-shaped tetramer is a prominent structural unit in low-lying states of P5, P6...
Distyryl-boradiazaindacenes: facile synthesis of novel near IR emitting fluorophores
Dost, Zeynep; Atilgan, Serdar; Akkaya, Engin U. (Elsevier BV, 2006-09-04)
Boradiazaindacenes with methyl substituents at 3 and 5 positions were for the first time shown to undergo efficient double condensation reactions with an aromatic aldehyde yielding a series of extended conjugation dyes. These new fluorophores have absorption maxima in the range of 650-660 nm. The dyes reported here have large quantum yields with 20 nm Stokes' shifted emission peaks. The straightforward synthesis of such red shifted BODIPY derivatives is important in relation to the synthesis of novel and us...
Thin-film microextraction coupled to LC-ESI-MS/MS for determination of quaternary ammonium compounds in water samples
Boyacı, Ezel; Pawliszyn, Janusz (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2014-01-01)
The dual nature of the quaternary ammonium compounds, having permanently charged hydrophilic quaternary ammonium heads and long-chain hydrophobic tails, makes the sample preparation step and analysis of these compounds challenging. A high-throughput method based on thin-film solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and liquid chromatography mass spectrometry was developed for simultaneous quantitative analysis of nine benzylic and aliphatic quaternary ammonium compounds. Chromatographic separation and detection o...
Thermal decomposition of polystyrene-b-poly(2-vinylpyridine) coordinated to co nanoparticles
Elmaci, Ayşegül; Hacaloğlu, Jale; Kayran, Ceyhan; Sakellariou, Georgios; Hadjichristidis, Nikos (2009-11-01)
Direct pyrolysis mass spectrometry analyses of polystyrene-block-poly(2-vinylpyridne), PS-b-P2VP, indicated that the thermal degradation of each component occurred independently through the decomposition pathways proposed for the corresponding homopolymers; depolymerization for PS and depolymerization and loss of protonated oligomers for P2VP by a more complex degradation mechanism. On the other hand, upon coordination to cobalt nanoparticles, thermal decomposition of the P2VP blocks was initiated by loss o...
