© 2021, Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration Inc.Coal is still a part of energy generation worldwide and has a significant role in the sustainable development of countries. The amount of shallow coal deposits is getting scarce, making efficient underground mining operations crucial for both local and global economies. In underground mining operations, longwall mining is a commonly utilized method to extract deep coal deposits. One of the leading engineering goals in longwall mining is increasing the efficiency of the system by investigating the effects of operational factors on equipment. This paper investigates the shearer performance for a longwall top coal caving operation by discrete event simulation that includes modeling the double-drum shearer, belt conveyors, stage loader, and armored face conveyors (AFC) to evaluate system performance by considering the amount of daily coal production of the shearer. As a result, the most influential factor on mine production is determined and a data-based framework is developed. This study suggests a framework for data collection, data analysis, and the interpretation of the operational data to evaluate the primary production unit’s performance. The models developed for the face coal extraction operations in a longwall top coal caving (LTCC) mine have a bi-directional cutting system and can be implemented in other operations readily.

A decision support system for electricity generation investment
Alpagut, Merih Ayşe; Güyagüler, Tevfik; Department of Mining Engineering (2010)
In the recent years, ongoing debates in the mineral sector has shown that efficient use of natural resources is of vital importance as the use of minerals is essential for modern living. Especially, in the context of sustainable development, it is required that mineral resources should be exploited to maximize the contribution to the well being of current generation without depriving the potential for future generations to meet their own needs. The aim of this thesis is to develop a decision support system ...
Discrete event simulation of a shearer performance for a longwall operation
Yılmaz, Enver; Karpuz, Celal; Erkayaoğlu, Mustafa; Department of Mining Engineering (2018)
Coal is an essential part of energy generation worldwide and has a major role in sustainable development. The amount of coal that can be extracted by surface mining is getting less which makes efficient underground mining operations crucial for both local and global economy. Underground coal mining is considered as a risky industry with a requirement of high amount of equipment investment. The majority of the investment in underground coal mines is generally related with the capital cost of initial equipmen...
A fuzzy logic tool to evaluate low-head hydropower technologies at the outlet of wastewater treatment plants
Ak, Mumtaz; Kentel Erdoğan, Elçin; KÜÇÜKALİ, SERHAT (2017-02-01)
This study aims to find the most sustainable mature Low-Head (LH) hydropower technology option to generate hydroelectricity at the outlet of wastewater treatment plants by assessing the relevant economic, technical, and environmental criteria. A total of six criteria are assessed: investment cost, payback period, energy generation performance, construction duration, fish-friendliness, and aeration capacity. The fuzzy logic tool estimates satisfaction of each criterion separately and then aggregates them int...
A NUMERICAL INVESTIGATION OF A TLP SYSTEM
Koç, Melodi Neşe; Oğuz, Elif; Department of Civil Engineering (2022-5-06)
Renewable energy is becoming a popular research topic over the last decades. The floating wind turbine system consists of a typical wind turbine with a platform that the tower of the turbine is implemented. One of the popular floating systems is known as Tension Leg Platforms (TLPs). In this study, TLP is chosen due to the limiting nature of the system in terms of heave, roll and pitch motions. Due to the complexity of the system, coupling analysis of TLPs become important. In this thesis, a benchmark study...
An Impact assessment model for technology development programs
Tiryaki, Erkan; Çakır, Serhat; Department of Science and Technology Policy Studies (2020)
Economic and social development of a country is directly related with the sustainable technology development capabilities and innovation capabilities of its own. Technology development activities are assumed to be the most challenging process of the R&D ecosystem. Mostly the public sector funds the technology development programs because of the required huge resources, difficulty in coordination of multiple partners and risky management stages. This dissertion aims to submit an impact assessment model for e...
