© 2021, International Association for Mathematical Geosciences. The optimization method for determining open pit limit is important, as it is crucial to achieve the most profitable outcome from the limited amount of reserves available. However, importance must be also given to geotechnical aspects to ensure that safety requirements are met. Thus, overall slope angle (OSAs) must be incorporated in the optimization process. In the conventional methods, there were problems in incorporating various OSAs, or they were included in the pit design after the completion of the optimization procedure. To include variable OSAs in the optimization, cone-based method is still considered as one of the most suitable approaches. To apply this method, a new mathematical model incorporating various OSAs into the ultimate pit problem through mixed integer programming (MIP) and simulated annealing is proposed. Four different cases of change in OSAs in the pit were included in the algorithm. The proposed method was verified by applying it to five different cases, and the OSA was achieved with a considerably low difference of 0°–2° while optimizing the ultimate pit. The comparison between the introduced algorithm and the Lerchs–Grossman algorithm indicated that an improvement within a range of 8–20% can be achieved.

An Objective Methodology For Merging Satellite And Model Based Soil Moisture Products
Yılmaz, Mustafa Tuğrul; Anderson, Martha; Hain, Chris (2012-04-19)
An objective methodology that does not require any user-defined parameter assumptions is introduced to obtain an improved soil moisture product along with associated uncertainty estimates. This new product is obtained by merging model-, thermal infrared remote sensing-, and microwave remote sensing-based soil moisture estimates in a least squares framework where uncertainty estimates for each product are obtained using triple collocation. The merged anomaly product is validated against in situ based soil mo...
A simulative model for optimum open pit design
Erarslan, K; Celebi, N (2001-10-01)
Previous research in the area of open pit mine optimization has focused on profit maximization by optimizing pit limits or optimizing production schedules. However, these two approaches are interrelated and dependent on each other. Recent studies have recognized the limitation of this optimization approach, Consequently, there is a need for a more comprehensive modelling strategy. Such an optimization model should incorporate mining activities that are simulated (as they are expected to occur) as much as po...
A probabilistic schedule delay analysis in construction projects by using fuzzy logic incorporated with relative importance index (RII) method
Özdemir, Mustafa; Gündüz, Murat; Department of Civil Engineering (2010)
The aim of this thesis is to propose a decision support tool for contractors before the bidding stage to quantify the probability of schedule delay in construction projects by using fuzzy logic incorporated with relative importance index (RII) method. Eighty three (83) different schedule delay factors were identified through detailed literature review and interview with experts from a leading Turkish construction company, then categorized into nine (9) groups and visualized by utilizing Ishikawa (Fish Bone)...
A New approach to 3-dimensional optimization of ultimate pit geometry for open pit mines with variable overall slope angles
Altuntov, Firdevs Kübra; Erkayaoğlu, Mustafa; Department of Mining Engineering (2019)
The mining activities have high economic risks and the determination of the optimum ultimate pit limit of an ore body greatly affects the economic feasibility of an open pit mine. Due to necessity of determining optimum pit limit, many researchers proposed different algorithms and heuristic methods which maximize economic value of a mine while satisfying operational constraints and extraction sequence constraints. In most of the proposed methods, overall slope angle variation in the pit is constant. However...
A unifying grid approach for solving potential flows applicable to structured and unstructured grid configurations
Cete, A. Ruhsen; Yuekselen, M. Adil; Kaynak, Uenver (Elsevier BV, 2008-01-01)
In this study, an efficient numerical method is proposed for unifying the structured and unstructured grid approaches for solving the potential flows. The new method, named as the "alternating cell directions implicit - ACDI", solves for the structured and unstructured grid configurations equally well. The new method in effect applies a line implicit method similar to the Line Gauss Seidel scheme for complex unstructured grids including mixed type quadrilateral and triangle cells. To this end, designated al...
