The concept ìenergyî has always been one of the strategic concepts. Its increasing dominance in economics has resulted in important outcomes in both national and international politics. The security of energy supply and the sustainable use of energy sources have become two main problems that have to be solved along with environmental concerns like climate change and socio- economic concerns like sustainable development. The idea of Renewable Energy (RE) has become a crucial factor in the current energy debates. The paper will examine RE policies of the European Union (EU) and Turkey. Although the EU is a pioneer in RE efforts, it has also policy implementation problems because of its multi-national structure. Turkey can acquire some benefits from the EU policies and practices for improving its energy structure and future policies.

Generative Design Research for Sustainability: Exemplary Cases for the Adaptation of the EC Guide Tool and the ERM Method

As design has gone through change, growth, and expansion of meaning and interpretation in practice and education, so has design research. The traditional boundaries of design are dissolving, and connections are being established with other fields at an exponential rate. Based on the proceedings from the 2017 International Association of Societies of Design Research conference, the Re:Research series is an edited collection that showcases a curated selection of eighty-three papers—just over half of the works...
Futurist thinking in urbanism: a retrospective & prospective view in the global context of transforming socio-economic structures
Efeoğlu, Hulusi Eren; Çalışkan, Olgu; Urban Design in City and Regional Planning Department (2018)
The idea of future has always emerged as a major concept for humanity. Each and every period of the civilizations, there has been always a motivation for people to manifest their ideal futures. In the context of urbanism, the intellectual capacity of utopian thinking has influenced most of the discussions on urbanism during the history. In this regard, destructive impacts of industrial revolutions have become the triggering forces to construct the ideal image of the future city. When the first industrial re...
Rationalization of metaphorical exploration: Improving the creativity phase of Total Systems Intervention (TSI) on the basis of theory and practice
Torlak, GN (2001-08-01)
Metaphors play a significant role in the creativity phase of Total Systems Intervention (TSI). They help managers and other stakeholders to think creatively about their organizations and to highlight their organizational problems. However, in the current form of the creativity phase of TSI there are no explicit criteria in the selection of metaphors or in the disclosure and prioritization of organizational issues. This paper seeks to open a dialog with management consultants who might be interested in the c...
Sustainability-oriented innovation system analyses of Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Turkey and Singapore
Kılkış, Şiir (2016-09-01)
The coherency of research, development, and innovation processes are vital in promoting a more resource efficient society. Sustainability-oriented innovation systems define specific kinds of innovation systems, i.e. those that are directed to the aims of sustainable development. This paper develops an integrated method with four layers of analysis to evaluate the priorities and performances of such systems. The method is applied to a sample of emerging and innovation based economies, namely Brazil, Russia, ...
Urban coherence: a morphological definition
Çalışkan, Olgu (2017-10-01)
Despite being one of the most commonly used normative concepts in urban design, coherence still lacks a firm morphological definition. Without an explicit specification of its spatial attributes, coherence remains a vague and subjective notion of design implicitly referred to as one of the basic properties of good urban form. As a contribution to the link between urban design and morphology, this paper renders the normative concept objectively in terms of a set of quantifiable morphological indicators. Spat...
