Effects of the Dark Triad personality traits on cyberbullying: A meta-analysis

2021-07-23
Cyberbullying was defined as using technology to harm, humiliate, and exclude others intentionally. Identifying the antecedents of cyberbullying perpetration is crucial to reduce cyberbullying and to eliminate the detrimental consequences of cyberbullying victimization. So far, very little attention has been paid to the antecedent of cyberbullying. Evidence suggests that the Dark Triad (DT) personality traits (psychopathy, narcissism and Machiavellianism), are among the most important antecedents of cyberbullying perpetration. The current meta-analysis aimed to investigate the effects of the DT Personality Traits on cyberbullying perpetration with the moderating role of participants’ age group. Relevant databases (i.e., Google Scholar, PsycINFO, ProQuest, Wiley Online Library, Scopus, Science Direct, Web of Science) were systematically reviewed. Only studies are written in Turkish and English, and studies that reported at least one Pearson correlation coefficient between study variables were included. In total, 22 study findings were integrated (k = 22, N = 12967 for Machiavellianism - cyberbullying; k = 24, N = 12533 for narcissism - cyberbullying; and k = 18, N = 10885 for psychopathy - cyberbullying). Study samples were comprised of adolescents, university students and adults. In the current study, a random-effect model was conducted through the R package. DerSimonian- Laird estimator was used to estimate the variance of the true effects. All analyses were performed with Fisher Z scores, which were translated from Pearson correlation coefficients (r). Finally, findings were converted back to the Pearson correlation. The findings revealed that the overall effect sizes of psychopathy, narcissism and Machiavellianism on cyberbullying were significant (r = .36, p < .001; r = .22, p < .001; r = .31, p < .001; respectively). Furthermore, the moderating role of participants’ age group in the link between psychopathy and cyberbullying was found to be significant. However, the moderating role of participants’ age group in the association between the other variables was found as insignificant. Keywords: meta-analysis, cyberbullying, the Dark Triad Personality Traits.

Effects of attachment security, threat, and attachment figure primes on cognitive attentional task performance
Sakman, Ezgi; Sümer, Nebi; Department of Psychology (2011)
The attachment system is activated when a threat is perceived in the environment. Attachment style differences moderate the levels of this activation. Whereas anxiously attached people are more hypervigilant to attachment-related stress, avoidant people have an ability to suppress their attachment related thoughts under stressful conditions. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the subliminal presentation of threat and attachment figure primes interfere with the cognitive task performance...
The Impacts of Persuasive Messages on Students Motivation and Learning Management System Use
ALKIŞ, NURCAN; Taşkaya Temizel, Tuğba (2016-11-16)
Persuasive messaging is used to change individuals' behaviours in a specific way, which are effective mechanisms in decision making and are mainly created based on persuasion strategies. Persuasive messaging has been applied in numerous contexts such as e-health, fund-raising. In this study, the effects of Cialdini's six persuasion principles (authority, scarcity, commitment, liking, consensus, reciprocation) in education context were studied via persuasive messaging for the first time in the literature. An...
Effects of working memory, attention, and expertise on pilots’ situation awareness
Çak, Serkan; Mısırlısoy, Mine; Say, Bilge; Department of Cognitive Sciences (2011)
Situation Awareness (SA), is defined as perception of environmental entities, comprehension of their meaning, and estimation of their status in the near future (Endsley, 1995a). The general aim of the study is to investigate the relationship between SA and individual cognitive di erences. Specifically, the predictive value of working memory and attentional capacity measures on SA measures, taken from pilots of different expertise levels, is of interest. In the literature, SA has mostly been studied from an ...
Effects of A DDoS attack on a military operation
Kılıç, Lütfi; Acartürk, Cengiz; Department of Information Systems (2018)
The goal of the present study is to investigate the underlying mechanics of a likely interaction between two phenomena, namely “War” and “DDoS Attacks”, using computational methods. For this, first, we study the characteristics of the Lanchester Combat (Kinetic) Model, the Kermack and McKendrick’s Epidemic (S-I-R) Model and the Mixed Epidemic Model. Then we propose a computational model and run simulations that simulate the influence of DDoS on the available combat model. The analyses and the results of sim...
Undermining User Privacy on Mobile Devices Using AI
Gulmezoglu, Berk; Zankl, Andreas; Tol, M. Caner; Islam, Saad; Eisenbarth, Thomas; Sunar, Berk (2019-01-01)
Over the past years, literature has shown that attacks exploiting the microarchitecture of modern processors pose a serious threat to user privacy. This is because applications leave distinct footprints in the processor, which malware can use to infer user activities. In this work, we show that these inference attacks can greatly be enhanced with advanced AI techniques. In particular, we focus on profiling the activity in the last-level cache (LLC) of ARM processors. We employ a simple Prime+Probe based mon...
