The quality of urban environments and the health of citizens have an essential connection with urban green areas through ecosystem services (ES). However, the rapid urbanization in cities has threatened ES provision and causes a series of social and environmental challenges. ES concept is a tool that represents a comprehensive understanding of these challenges and that promotes developing planning strategies towards more liveable, sustainable, and resilient cities. To that end, this thesis aims to investigate planning and design inputs for urban green areas to maximize the current capacity of needed ES to improve human health and wellbeing. It uses and examines the district of Çankaya in Ankara as the case study. A literature review on ES helped to define primary beneficiaries of related ES. This research examines existing urban green sites in the Çankaya district, their spatial distribution, and mapping their ES quality using geographical information systems software (ArcGIS). Spatial analysis results were handled with the analysis tool which was developed within the scope of the thesis. Based on the analysis tool results, this research proposes design inputs within the ES perspective to improve the functionality of selected urban parks in the Çankaya district of Ankara.

Analyzing Green/Open Space Accessibility by Using GIS. Case Study of Northern Cyprus Cities
Kara, Can; Akcit, Nuhcan (2015-03-19)
It is well known that green spaces are vital for increasing the quality of life within the urban environment. World Health Organization states that it should be 9 square meters per person at least. European Environment Agency defines that 5000 square meters of green space should be accessible within 300 meters distance from households. Green structure in Northern Cyprus is not sufficient and effective in this manner. In Northern Cyprus, they have neglected the urban planning process and they have started to...
Aiming for smart wind energy: A comparison analysis between wind speed forecasting techniques
Alhaddad, Mohamad; Ever, Enver; Fahrioglu, Mura; Al-Turjman, Fadi (2019-09-13)
Smart cities are one of the promising application areas where the energy management (supply/dispatch) issues have the potential to positively affect the society. In the common era of information and technology, the consumers expect the required amount of energy to be present at anytime. This energy is obtained through renewable and nonrenewable resources. Smart wind energy is the idea of efficient energy generation utilizing the wind while satisfying green expectations. However, the random characteristics c...
Investigating the drinking and surface water quality and associated health risks in a semi-arid multi-industrial metropolis (Faisalabad), Pakistan

Urban areas under the influence of multi-industrial activities with arid and semi-arid environments witness the significant increase in environmental pollution especially in the water sector. The present study evaluated the water quality and associated health risk assessment through heavy metal pollution. Drinking (n = 48) and surface (n = 37) water samples were collected from semi-arid multi-industrial metropolis, Faisalabad, Pakistan. Physio-chemical and biological parameters and different metals (Al, As,...

Smart cities have brought significant improvements in quality of life and services to citizens and urban environments. They are fully enabled to control the physical objects in real time and provide intelligent information to citizens in terms of transport, healthcare, smart buildings, public safety, smart parking, and traffic system and smart agriculture, and so on. The applications of smart cities are able to collect sensitive information. However, various security and privacy issues may arise at differen...
Orta Ölçekli Parkların Mikro İklimsel Etki Alanlarının Araştırılması: Gezi Parkı, Maçka Parkı Ve Serencebey Parkı Örneği

Sürdürülebilir kent yönetiminde önemi gün geçtikçe artan park alanlarının biyofiziksel özellikleri, kentsel iklimin iyileşmesinde önemli yer tutmaktadır. Özellikle ağaçların yoğun olarak bulunduğu park alanları; havanın serinletilmesi, bağıl neminin artışı, temiz hava temini, havanın filtrelenmesi, gürültünün emilmesi, oksijen üretimi gibi görevleri ile sera etkisinin azaltılması ve enerji tasarrufunun sağlanmasına da katkıda bulunmaktadırlar. Bu makalede, benzer yapıya sahip 3 orta ölçekli parkın çevresiyl...
