The main objective of this study is to optimise a new composite for the depollution of contaminated water. This pollution can have adverse effects on both human health and the environment. The aim of this work was the elaboration and characterisation of a Novel polyaniline composite with plant leaf powder of Heliotrope (PANI@HL) for the removal of Orange G dye in an aqueous media. Hence, the physicochemical and morphological composition of PANI@HL were characterised by field-emission-scanning-electron-microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and Fourier transforms infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. In addition, the adsorption in a batch system for OG dye adsorption onto PANI@HL material was studied. Therefore, we accomplished a parametric study of the adsorption by studying the effect of several important parameters on the decolourising power of the used material, namely, the pH of the solution, contact time, initial concentration of the adsorbate, adsorbent dosage and temperature. The experimental results were analysed by the Freundlich and Langmuir models of adsorption. Experimental results disclose that the pseudo-second-order model provided a good depiction of the whole kinetic experimental data more than that of Lagergren first-order model, and the maximum monolayer adsorption capacity was 242.39 mg.g(-1) for PANI@HL. In addition, the adsorption data were well fitted with Langmuir isothermal model. The developed PANI@HL material demonstrated good reusability up to four regeneration cycles. These findings revealed that the as-prepared composite PANI@HL, has the potential to be employed as a low-cost adsorbent for the adsorption of orange G from aqueous media.

Degradation of decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209) in microcosms mimicking sediment environment subjected to comparative bioremediation strategies
Demirtepe, Hale; İmamoğlu, İpek (Elsevier BV, 2019-03-01)
The aim of this study was to examine bioremediation strategies for BDE-209 contaminated sediments. Sediment microcosms were established to observe anaerobic debromination of BDE-209 under conditions representing three bioremediadon strategies: biostimulation, bioaugmentation and natural attenuation. To simulate biostimulation, a defined mineral medium containing both a carbon source (sodium formate) and electron donor (ethanol) was added into sediments. Bioaugmentation was established by enrichment of the s...
Investigation of adsorption of pesticides by organo-zeolite from wastewater
Lüle, Güzide Meltem; Atalay, M Ümit; Özbayoğlu, Gülhan; Department of Mining Engineering (2011)
The aim of this study was to determine the adsorption capacity of activated carbon and organo-zeolites for removal of pesticides in water. In order to prepare organo-zeolite, two kinds of cationic surfactants, namely, hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (HTAB) and dodecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (DTAB) were used. Adsorption studies of cationic surfactant on zeolite were investigated in respect to initial concentration of cationic surfactant, time, and temperature. It has been found that the best fitted is...
Synthesis of an arginine-functionalized polyaniline@FeOOH composite with high removal performance of hexavalent chromium ions from water: Adsorption behavior, regeneration and process capability studies

In this study, the synthesis of a novel arginine-functionalized polyaniline/FeOOH (Arg-PANI@FeOOH) composite for hazardous Hexavalent chromium ions (Cr(VI)) removal from wastewater was reported. The SEM, EDS, FTIR, XRD, and PZC measurements were used to characterize the as-developed Arg-PANI@FeOOH composite. Batch adsorption experiments were used to investigate the influence of pH, temperature, contact time, Arg-PANI@FeOOH amount, initial Cr(VI) concentration and coexisting ions on the efficiency of Cr(VI) ...
Evaluation of the water-food nexus with the focus on agricultural water management in the Upper Sakarya watershed
Özel, Beyza; Alp, Emre; Department of Environmental Engineering (2021-5-15)
This study investigates the tradeoffs between water and food (agriculture) nexus and evaluates alternative scenarios focusing on sustainable water governance for agricultural production in Upper Sakarya Basin. For this purpose, pressures on surface water and groundwater resources are determined for the study period (2004-2016) by considering inputs and outputs such as demand, supply, and discharge by all sectors. With concentrating on the impacts on demand and supply dynamics, the effectiveness of managemen...
INVESTIGATION OF PHOTOFERMENTATIVE POLY-HYDROXYBUTYRATE (PHB) AND HYDROGEN PRODUCTION VIA RHODOBACTER CAPSULATUS
Hoşafcı, Ertan; Bayramoğlu, Tuba Hande; Koku, Harun; Department of Environmental Engineering (2023-1-26)
The aim of this thesis study is to investigate factors affecting hydrogen (H2) and poly-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) production via photofermentation using two strains of Rhodobacter capsulatus species. To this purpose, three experimental designs were set up, namely Set 1, Set 2 and Set 3. In Set 1, various approaches in pretreatment of bacterial biomass were investigated. For R. capsulatus Wild Type (WT) strain, employment of different pretreatment methods did not make a significant difference, where an average ...
