Background: Aromatic polyamides are important materials having outstanding thermal, electronic and mechanical properties among high performance polymers and industrial plastics. In addition, aromatic polyamides can be utilized in electronic devices with their low dielectric constant which indicates the storage capacity of these devices. Objective: Free volume is very important for dielectric materials and increase in free volume of a polymer reduces its dielectric constant. The aims of the current study are to create free volume in the bulk polyamide structure and to reduce the dielectric constant by using β-Ni(OH)2 particles. Method: The composites obtained from β-Ni(OH)2 (flower-like nanoparticles) in a naphthalene-based polyamide matrix were prepared. Firstly, β-Ni(OH)2 nanoparticles were synthesized by microwave-assisted solvothermal technique under various reaction conditions. Then, polyamide/β-Ni(OH)2 composites were prepared via direct dispersion methods at different reinforcement ratios. Results: β-Ni(OH)2 (flower-like nanoparticles) and polyamide/β-Ni(OH)2 composites were prepared successfully. Our studies showed that the dispersion of β-Ni(OH)2 nanoparticles in polyamide matrix is homogenous and prepared composites have good thermal and dielectric properties with promising results for electronic industry. Conclusion: Dielectric properties of the prepared composites decrease with increasing β-Ni(OH)2 nanoparticle content and all composites show low dielectric constant when β-Ni(OH)2 nanoparticle content is over 1 wt.% compared to the pure polyamide.

Molecular dynamics study of random and ordered metals and metal alloys
Kart, Hasan Hüseyin; Tomak, Mehmet; Department of Physics (2004)
The solid, liquid, and solidification properties of Pd, Ag pure metals and especially PdxAg1-x alloys are studied by using the molecular dynamics simulation. The effects of temperature and concentration on the physical properties of PdxÞAg1-x are analyzed. Sutton-Chen (SC) and Quantum Sutton-Chen (Q-SC) many-body potentials are used as interatomic interactions which enable one to investigate the thermodynamic, static, and dynamical properties of transition metals. The simulation results such as cohesive ene...
Stress evolution of Ge nanocrystals in dielectric matrices
Bahariqushchi, Rahim; Raciti, Rosario; KASAPOGLU, Ahmet Emre; GÜR, Emre; Sezen, Meltem; Kalay, Yunus Eren; MIRABELLA, Salvatore; Aydınlı, Alptekin (2018-05-04)
Germanium nanocrystals (Ge NCs) embedded in single and multilayer silicon oxide and silicon nitride matrices have been synthesized using plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition followed by conventional furnace annealing or rapid thermal processing in N-2 ambient. Compositions of the films were determined by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The formation of NCs under suitable process conditions was observed with high resolution transmission electron microscope mi...
Electronic properties of transition metal oxides
Mete, Ersen; Ellialtıoğlu, Süleyman Şinasi; Department of Physics (2003)
Transition metal oxides constitute a large class of materials with variety of very interesting properties and important technological utility. A subset with perovskite structure has been the subject matter of the current theoretical investigation with an emphasis on their electronic and structural behavior. An analytical and a computational method are used to calculate physical entities like lattice parameters, bulk moduli, band structures, density of electronic states and charge density distributions for v...
Multifunctional properties of polymer foams and composites
Özkutlu Demirel, Merve; Bayram, Göknur; Department of Chemical Engineering (2020-9)
Polymer foams are low-density materials that consist of solid and gas phases and are used for insulation and transportation applications. This study aims to produce poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) foams with low density and improved thermal and mechanical properties using syntactic foam production and supercritical CO2 (scCO2) foaming methods. Syntactic foams were produced dispersing 5, 10, and 15 wt.% hollow glass microspheres (HGMs) in the PMMA matrix. Using different HGM types based on their density, su...
Microstructure hierarchy - Mechanical property relationship for hypereutectic Al-Si alloy powders solidified far from equilibrium
Kalay, Yunus Eren; Chumbley, L.s. (2006-12-01)
Microstructural selection in aluminum silicon powder alloys can directly influence the consolidated materials' mechanical properties. However, due to processing and characterization difficulties, a complete understanding of powder microstructure as a function of undercooling and solidification velocity, and the role microstructure plays on mechanical properties, remains an elusive goal. In this study high pressure gas atomization processing was used to produce rapidly solidified hypereutectic Al-Si alloys. ...
