Correlation between idea generation effort and resulting design solution success: An empirical study using RNEV as a new assessment technique

2022-06-01
© 2022 Elsevier LtdThis study investigates the relation between idea generation outcomes and resulting design solutions in an educational setting. The study offers the Refined Novelty and Explored Variety (RNEV) technique as an outcome-based assessment technique. This technique is used against the idea generation outcomes of 45 students obtained through the Morphological Chart method, comprising 3185 sketches. The ideas are categorized into a genealogy tree for visualizing the solution spaces of the students, and their novelty and variety scores are calculated. The correlation is investigated between the scores and the final jury grades assigned for the success of the resulting design solutions. Results show that there is a significant positive correlation between the novelty and variety scores of the ideas, and the final jury grades.

Fostering Creative Cognition In Design Education: A Comparative Analysis Of Algorithmic And Heuristic Educational Methods In Basic Design Education
Çiğdem, Zeynep; Ürey, Uysal (2021-6-8)
This research aims to examine the impact of algorithmic and heuristic educational methods in basic design education in an attempt to see their effects on the development of the creative cognition of students. The impact of educational methods in the development of creativity and creative problem-solving ability in design education has been addressed by a limited number of studies. The impact of algorithmic and heuristic educational methods in basic design education, on the other hand, has not been studied a...
Experience reflection modelling (ERM) as a generative research method and student engagement in product design at undergraduate level
Turhan, Senem; Doğan, Çağla; Department of Industrial Design (2013)
Research approaches driven by design thinking have the potential to bridge early stages of design process to idea generation phases in design education. Generative research is emerged from participatory approach which is used at early stages of design process aims to elicit user needs, experiences, expectations and preferences by using generative tools and techniques through helping non-designer participants express their thoughts, feelings, opinions effectively independent of their skills and abilities in ...
Experience reflection modelling as a generative research method in an educational case for sustainable product design
Turhan, Senem; Doğan, Çağla (2014-01-01)
A generative research method, namely Experience Reflection Modelling (ERM), has been developed aimed at helping students explore and reflect upon design considerations for sustainability in the idea generation phase of a design process. ERM has been integrated into a product design for sustainability project as part of the design education in the Department of Industrial Design at Middle East Technical University. This paper begins by providing an overview of the generative research approach, explaining its...
A Methodology for cross-resolution modeling in DEVS using event-B refinement
Kara, Ahmet; Oğuztüzün, Mehmet Halit S.; Alpdemir, Mahmut Nedim; Department of Computer Engineering (2014)
This thesis proposes a software engineering solution for implementing simulations via composition of models at different resolution levels with the help of formal methods. Our solution provides a systematic methodology that offers a well-defined sequence of stages to obtain executable converters for entity resolution mapping, given the types of entity attributes that are exchanged at model interfaces and the mapping specifications. Our methodology relies on Event-B as the formal specification language and D...
Model based preliminary design and optimization of aircrafts
Özdemir, Mustafa; Kurtuluş, Dilek Funda; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2022-8)
This study aims to create an interdisciplinary, multi-level design approach that is based on six degrees of freedom mathematical model. The model provides all disciplines to communicate with each other simultaneously, thanks to an automated process chain system. The main advantage of automatization of analyses for the design process is observing interdisciplinary effects clearly without wasting time and money. Instead of using only empirical relations, in this study, calculations are originating from trim a...
