This book focuses on enhancing urban regeneration performance and strategies that pave the way toward sustainable urban development models and solutions. The book at hand thoroughly examines the latest studies on the regeneration of urban areas and attempts at alleviating the negative impacts associated with high population density and urban heat effects. It gathers contributions that combine theoretical reflections and international case studies on urban regeneration and transformation with the single goal of tackling existing social and economic imbalances and developing new solutions. The primary audience of this book will be from the field of architecture and urban planning, offering new insights on how to address the myriad of problems that our cities are facing.

Exploiting Earth Observation in Sustainable Urban Planning and Management - the GEOURBAN Project
Esch, Thomas; Taubenboeck, Hannes; Chrysoulakis, Nektarios; Düzgün, Hafize Şebnem; Tal, Abraham; Feigenwinter, Christian; Parlow, Eberhard (2013-04-23)
Sustainable urban planning and management demand innovative concepts and techniques to obtain up-to-date and area-wide information on the characteristics and development of the urban system. The increasing availability of Earth Observation (EO) technologies has provided new opportunities for a wide range of urban applications, such as mapping and monitoring of the urban environment, socio-economic estimations, characterization of urban climate, analysis of regional and global impacts and urban security and ...
Sustainability of urban regeneration in Turkey: Assessing the performance of the North Ankara Urban Regeneration Project
Korkmaz, Cansu; Balaban, Osman (Elsevier BV, 2020-01-01)
The increasing environmental footprints of cities necessitated the integration sustainability principles into urban planning and development frameworks. The quest for new methods for regenerating existing urban quarters in sustainable manners resulted in the concept of sustainable urban regeneration. The concept aims to develop urban regeneration projects in line with the three key pillars of sus...
Proactive approach to urban design case study : South Shoreditch / Hackney, London
Borazancı, Duygu; Günay, Baykan; Urban Design in City and Regional Planning Department (2010)
This thesis analyzes the process of proactive urban design in a theoretical framework. It asks searching questions about how built environments are conceived of, designed, delivered, protected, enhanced and managed, and it explores these by examining the proactive planning practices in Britain. It defines the proactive approach firstly as; how both the spatial policy and detailed guidance express and prescribe the desired physical form, and secondly; how this is pursued through active negotiation. While enc...
Sustainability in Rural Development Projects in Mexico

Second, it will lay a historical background to examine why and how these sustainable rural cities have become a policy priority of the Mexican state since 2010. Finally, the paper wi...
A Study on the utilization of microalgaefor producing light and biofuel in the built environment
Sünger, Yağmur; Elias Özkan, Soofia Tahira; Department of Building Science in Architecture (2019)
Microalgae utilization in the built environment can be a key way to develop sustainable urban environments. Microalgae have many potentials such as providing the raw material for biofuels, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to indoor air quality, treating wastewater, and illuminating spaces. Therefore, all these features offer the opportunity of symbiosis between the microalgae and the built environment. Although there are many studies on microalgae, more research is needed at the intersection ...
