Improving Asymmetric Decarboxylative Aldol Reaction and Synthesis of TPT-Acetylene Matrix

In recent years, studies, and the use of organocatalysts have increased considerably. Unlike metal catalysts, non-toxic, robust organocatalysts have ensured their usability in many organic reactions. In this work, a new sulfonamide type bifunctional organocatalyst was synthesized and used in the asymmetric reaction. First, the decarboxylative aldol reaction of α-amidohemimalonates with aldehydes was studied in the presence of a bifunctional organocatalyst. An optimization study of this reaction was performed to enhance the enantioselectivity and diastereoselectivity. Racemic and chiral products of decarboxylative aldol reaction were synthesized with α-amidohemimalonate and 4-nitrobenzaldehyde. The structure elucidation of the product was done with NMR spectroscopy, and the selectivities were determined with HPLC. The second part of the thesis involves a different aspect of organocatalysts' usage. Because of high catalyst loading requirements or difficulties in catalyst recovery and reuse in organocatalysis, these catalysts have limited practical applicability. In this context, the immobilization of organocatalysts on solid supports has emerged as a promising strategy to avoid these limitations. In this project, various thiophene-pyrrole-thiophene (TPT) host systems that are able to anchor proper organocatalysts were synthesized. To reach the TPT product, 1-(thiophen-2-yl)-4-(thiophen-3-yl)butane-1,4-dione (the diketone precursor) was synthesized first. Then, the TPT products were manufactured. The TPT monomer was polymerized and proved to become a reusable organocatalysts' matrix.

Tracing domestic change in Turkey’s poverty and social inclusion regime: a case in europeanization?
Saner, Fulya; Ercan, Hakan; Bölükbaşı, H. Tolga; Department of European Studies (2011)
Europeanization has been the subject of various studies in the last decades. It has been operationalized as a historical process, as a cultural diffusion of European values, as a process of institutional adaptation of institutions and lastly as the adaptation of policies. Taking the last approach, this thesis aims to examine the nature and the extent of the impact of the European Union’s poverty and social exclusion strategy on Turkish poverty and social exclusion regime in the EU accession process. It take...
An analysis of living environments of the elderly and a project for assisted living in Ankara
Erbaş, İrem; İmamoğlu, Vacit; Department of Architecture (2006)
Ageing has become a significant research area in the last few decades. The most important reason that makes ageing issue significant is the increasing rate of the older indviduals within the population all around the world. Statistical data on ageing both in Turkey and in the world reveals that, in the near future, the number of population over 65 will increase dramatically. It can be asserted that there will be an urgent need of specifically designed accommodation for this portion of the population. Hence,...
Employability of Psychology Graduates and their Job Satisfaction in Turkey an online survey
SÜMER, NEBİ; HELVACI, ELİF; Mısırlısoy, Mine (SAGE Publications, 2013-01-01)
The interest in studying psychology has dramatically increased in the recent decades in Turkey. However, only 60% of psychology graduates work in jobs related to psychology. Moreover, there is no data on employability and job distribution of psychology graduates or on their job satisfaction. In the current study, the authors' first aim was to assess the employability of psychology graduates, and their job satisfaction in Turkey. Secondly, they examined the specific advantages of having a postgraduate degree...
Exploring the predictors of doctoral students academic satisfaction
Çapa Aydın, Yeşim; Gelmez Burakgazi, Sevinç; Toplu, Ezgi (null; 2011-09-16)
During last decade, doctoral education has been an issue of investigation and reform in response to several challenges. In United States, drop-out rates have been reported to be really high; i.e., about half does not persist to graduation (Bair & Haworth, 2004). The European Union changed the higher education agenda “to make Europe the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy in the world” (Kehm, 2006, p. 67). In addition, the number of doctoral students has been observed to increase significant...
The impact of extending non-compulsory schooling on schooling and employment outcomes of youth
Karabilgin, Ali Gökhan; Dayıoğlu Tayfur, Meltem; Department of Economics (2020-10-14)
This study examines the impact of an increase in the duration of non-compulsory upper secondary education from three to four years on the schooling and employment outcomes of youth. We use micro-data from various rounds of Household Labor Force Surveys of Turkey and a Difference-in-Difference design where we exploit the variation across birth cohorts in policy exposure for identification. Our first analysis involves looking at how school enrollment of 15-18-year-olds changes as a result of the policy....
