© 2021 Elsevier LtdThe production of succinic acid from cheese whey was studied with immobilized and free cells of Actinobacillus succinogenes. Alginate was used as immobilizing agent, the durability of alginate beads was assessed and improved. Batch fermentations with free cells were conducted using cheese whey, lactose and glucose, highest succinic acid production was achieved with cheese whey (24.9 g L−1) with 35 g L−1 starting lactose concentration. For immobilized batch fermentations, 74.9% yield and 1.09 g L−1 h−1 productivity achieved with cheese whey. Repeated-batch fermentations conducted with whey using the same beads in 5 repeated cycles (144 h) and 0.89 g L−1 h−1 of productivity was achieved. For continuous fermentations with whey and immobilized cells, maximum 0.84 g/g yield was achieved. In this work, it is suggested that immobilizing A. succinogenes with alginate-whey mixture is an effective technique and cheese whey is a valuable resource for the production of succinic acid.

IMMOBILIZATION OF ACTINOBACILLUS SUCCINOGENES BY USING ALGINATE FOR SUCCINIC ACID PRODUCTION FROM DAIRY WASTES
Uysal, Utku; Çekmecelioğlu, Deniz; Hamamcı, Haluk; Department of Food Engineering (2022-2-02)
Succinic acid is a highly versatile building block that is used in a wide range of industrial applications. The biological production of succinic acid has emerged in the last years as an efficient alternative to the chemical production based on fossil fuels. However, in order to fully replace the competing petro-based chemical process from which it has been produced so far, some challenges remain to be surpassed. In particular, one main obstacle would be to reduce its production costs, mostly associated to ...
Selenium speciation in chicken breast samples from inorganic and organic selenium fed chickens using high performance liquid chromatography-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry
BAKIRDERE, Sezgin; Volkan, Mürvet; Ataman, Osman Yavuz (2018-08-01)
Speciation of selenium in chicken breast samples was performed by anion and cation exchange HPLC systems combined with ICP-MS. Samples were categorized into three groups consisting of Control Group, Inorganic Se Fed Group and Organic Se Fed Group. After the optimization of speciation parameters, selenomethionine, selenocystine, Se(IV) and Se(VI) were determined in the samples using the HPLC-ICP-MS system. Instrumental limit of detection values for selenium(IV), selenium(VI), Se in selenomethionine and Se in...
Electrochemical behaviour and electrochemical polymerization of fluoro-substituted anilines
Cihaner, A; Önal, Ahmet Muhtar (2002-08-01)
The electrochemical behaviour of three fluoro-substituted aniline monomers, 2-fluoroaniline (2FAN), 3-fluoroaniline (3FAN) and 4-fluoroaniline (4FAN), was investigated in aqueous acidic and organic media by means of cyclic voltammetry (CV) studies. Constant potential electrolysis (CPE) of the monomers in acetonitrile-water mixture (1: 1 by volume) using NaClO4 as supporting electrolyte yielded soluble polymers. The mechanism of electrochemical polymerization was investigated using in situ electron spin reso...
Speciation of Selenium in Supplements by High Performance Liquid Chromatography-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry
BAKIRDERE, Sezgin; Volkan, Mürvet; Ataman, Osman Yavuz (2015-06-13)
Anion and cation exchange high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) combined with inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) were used for speciation of selenium in supplements. All the parameters in the extraction, separation, and determination procedures were optimized. Recovery studies for the selenium species from the anion and cation exchange columns were performed and there were no analyte losses. Limits of detection for selenium(IV), selenium(VI), Se in selenomethionine, and Se in sele...
Diethylzinc mediated 1 3 dipolar cycloaddition reaction of chiral azomethine ylides asymmetric synthesis of ferrocenyl substituted pyrrolidine derivatives
Doğan, Özdemir; DİNÇER, Ülkü; ARICI, Cengiz (2002-10-01)
Asymmetric synthesis of ferrocenyl-substituted pyrrolidine derivatives was successfully achieved by diethylzinc-mediated 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions of chiral azomethine ylides with a number of electron-deficient dipolarophiles. Chiral azomethine ylides were formed by condensing glycyl sultam with ferrocenecarboxaldehyde via imine tautomerization and complexation with diethylzinc. All of the cycloaddition reactions gave ferrocenyl-substituted pyrrolidine derivatives with very high regio- and diaster...
