The urgency of climate change clearly indicates that human civilization cannot continue as before, and entire systems, particularly urban systems, need to be open to realizing transitions that alter the ways of using energy, water, and natural resources. Urban emissions can be summarized based on three drivers, namely the use of embodied and operational energy, impacts of spatial decisions on human activities, and land use change. Urban systems require a focus on rapidly limiting and reversing these drivers of emissions while preserving precious carbon sinks toward reaching net-zero emissions. In particular, transitions in urban and infrastructure systems are necessary to accelerate the climate mitigation response for realigning existing trajectories to no more than 1.5 degree Celsius of global warming. The scope of these transitions must take into account multiple urban systems in integration with urban planning. This chapter undertakes opportunities for decoupling urban growth and emissions from environmental pressures. The central focus includes perspectives from an original composite indicator while spanning urban growth and renewable energy solutions. Urban systems that achieve integrated approaches can secure a better future and contribute to a safer planet.

Accelerating mitigation of climate change with sustainable development of energy, water and environment systems
Kılkış, Şiir; Krajacic, Goran; Duic, Neven; Rosen, Marc A.; Al-Nimr, Moh'd Ahmad (2021-10-01)
Integrated approaches across energy, water and environment systems can accelerate the process of mitigating climate change through urgent action. New scientific advances that extend multiple opportunities in this direction have emanated from the 2nd Latin American, 1st Asia Pacific, 4th South East European and 15th Conferences on Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems as represented in this editorial. The review of recent scientific advances connects the 27 research articles in thi...
Evaluation indicators for selection of sustainable building materials
Canarslan, Özgecan; Elias Özkan, Soofia Tahira; Department of Building Science in Architecture (2007)
Environmental issues have gained importance due to global environmental threat, such as depletion of energy resources and the impacts of climate change. The building sector is responsible for almost half of the impacts on the environment. Hence, this study focuses on the importance of environmental impacts of building materials. In this regard, firstly, sustainability indicators for building materials were determined and the environmental impacts of selected building materials were studied. Then, the evalua...
Sustainability and industrial design education: the case of the department of industrial design at METU, Turkey
Tural, Senem; Ünlü, Canan Emine; Department of Industrial Design (2009)
Problems that the earth has faced with such as the depletion of natural resources, contamination of water, air and land, extension of species, and the global warming have brought up the sustainable development to the agenda. This state of affairs has elicited the undeniable role of industrial design activity on the sustainable development; sustainability has become an important concern of industrial design education. The purpose of this study is to determine the state of sustainable design education in the ...
New Perspective on more Sustainable and Affordable Housing for Lower Income Group in Turkey - Assessing Life Cycle Cost
Emekçi, Şeyda; Tanyer, Ali Murat (2016-11-18)
A building must be sustainable in order to make as little impact as possible on the natural environments and use energy, water, land and other resources efficiently. However, the concept of sustainability makes sense when applied by all segments of society. No matter how sustainable, a building never achieves environmental protection completely, while another build-ing next to its harms the environment. To ensure environmental protection completely, especially the low-income group must be included in this s...
Extending the lifespan of small kitchen appliances for sustainable design : a research on product maintenance and repair with technical services in Ankara
Terzioğlu, Nazlı Gökçe; Doğan, Çağla; Department of Industrial Design (2013)
Growing environmental issues from global climate change, contamination and depletion of renewable and non-renewable resources to waste disposal have been resulted from unsustainable production and consumption patterns. Most of the mass-produced products are designed and produced for short lifespans without considering environmental and social effects. Since small kitchen appliances are lower priced compared to other household appliances, when a part of the product is broken, the whole product is disposed of...
