All rights reserved. The Controlled Input Method is a brainstorming technique that adopts both a nominal and an interactive approach, which has been indicated in the literature as making creative group discussion sessions effective. A brainstorming session using the Controlled Input Method was carried out as the initial stage of the design process of a graduate-level design project in an educational setting. The brainstorming session was found effective in terms of productivity. The documentation of the session was qualitatively and quantitatively analysed for identifying the factors contributing to the session’s effectiveness. The analyses revealed seven discussion topics on the problem area, three solution areas gathering design ideas, seven statement types used in the documentation, and two problem frames situating the discussions, contributing to the identification of fifteen strategies used in collective design reasoning. The strategies are discussed in terms of content creation, problem exploration and idea generation as functions of design reasoning, and in reference to divergence, convergence, quantity, situatedness, and goal-orientedness, as indicators of effectiveness.

Positive impact of state similarity on reinforcement learning performance
Girgin, Sertan; Polat, Faruk; Alhaj, Reda (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2007-10-01)
In this paper, we propose a novel approach to identify states with similar subpolicies and show how they can be integrated into the reinforcement learning framework to improve learning performance. The method utilizes a specialized tree structure to identify common action sequences of states, which are derived from possible optimal policies, and defines a similarity function between two states based on the number of such sequences. Using this similarity function, updates on the action-value function of a st...
End User Evaluation of the FAIR4Health Data Curation Tool
Gencturk, Mert; Teoman, Alper; Alvarez-Romero, Celia; Martinez-Garcia, Alicia; Parra-Calderon, Carlos Luis; Poblador-Plou, Beatriz; Löbe, Matthias; Sinaci, A Anil (2021-05-27)
The aim of this study is to build an evaluation framework for the user-centric testing of the Data Curation Tool. The tool was developed in the scope of the FAIR4Health project to make health data FAIR by transforming them from legacy formats into a Common Data Model based on HL7 FHIR. The end user evaluation framework was built by following a methodology inspired from the Delphi method. We applied a series of questionnaires to a group of experts not only in different roles and skills, but also from various...
Communication behaviors and trust in collaborative online teams
Tokel, Saniye Tuğba; Yıldırım, Zahide (2008-01-01)
This study investigates preservice teachers' trust levels and collaborative communication behaviors namely leadership, feedback, social interaction, enthusiasm, task and technical uncertainties, and task-oriented interactions in online learning environment. A case study design involving qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis was employed. The sample consisted of 32 (24 female, 8 male) 3rd year foreign language education students who enrolled in the "Instructional Technology and Material D...
Linear Analysis of Zero-Lift Pitching Moment Coefficient and Gravity Effects on Missile Autopilots
Ovec, Naz T.; Erer, Koray S.; Kutay, Ali Türker (2015-03-14)
The most of the studies on disturbance rejection are covered with robust control methods, where this paper suggests a narrowed but a more simplified linear model based technique to assess the robustness of the controllers. In this paper presented, the problems originated from the disturbances are aimed to be obtained as far in advance as possible. The method used in this work reduces the iterative fine tuning time course between the non-linear simulation and the linear model; hence it enhances the authority...
Fostering Creative Cognition In Design Education: A Comparative Analysis Of Algorithmic And Heuristic Educational Methods In Basic Design Education
Çiğdem, Zeynep; Ürey, Uysal (2021-6-8)
This research aims to examine the impact of algorithmic and heuristic educational methods in basic design education in an attempt to see their effects on the development of the creative cognition of students. The impact of educational methods in the development of creativity and creative problem-solving ability in design education has been addressed by a limited number of studies. The impact of algorithmic and heuristic educational methods in basic design education, on the other hand, has not been studied a...
