The Transition to Radical Democracy in Latin America?: Insights from the Cases of Bolivia, Colombia and Chile

Aykaç, Osman Eren
The aim of the thesis is to re-examine the democracy in Bolivia, Colombia and Chile from the radical democratic perspective surrounded by the newly emerging political pendulum as the resurgence of the Left in Latin America. The argument that Latin American democracy is in transition process to radical democracy has been advocated within the framework of the developments in the region. Since the 1980s, defined as the democratization process in Latin America, social movements and struggles continue within the framework of inclusive citizenship, greater freedom and the expansion of political participation. Democracy and democratization are phenomenas that have always been up-to-date in the context of Latin America. Moreover, Latin American democracy has its own characteristics, which differ from the experience of countries that can be described as the West or the Global North. Therefore, analyzing Latin American democracy only in terms of liberal democratic conceptualization may lead to a deficit conclusion. In order to understand the democracy comprehensively in the region, it is necessary to examine concepts related to democracy such as demos, populism, citizenship, and political participation. By doing this, it should be taken into account regional dynamics, historical institutional legacies, and especially to reconceptualize and understand them in line with the tenets of the theory of radical democracy. Radical democratic transition is also evaluated as the possibility of ‘the New Pink Tide’ flourished by ‘A Left Turn’ in Latin America.

Small states in MERCOSUR: an asymmetrical relationship
İlhan, Ezgi.; Topal Yılmaz, Aylin; Department of Latin and North American Studies (2019)
This thesis examines the asymmetric structure within the framework of MERCOSUR, an economic union in Latin America, and questions the motivation of the small states of Paraguay and Uruguay to be part of this union, despite the disadvantageous consequences of this asymmetric structure. The main argument of this thesis is that small states within MERCOSUR have to cooperate as a result of sectoral and economic interdependence to their counterparts which arose from their existing structural disadvantageous posi...
Venezuelan democracy in transition: problematizing the Chávez period
Dinçer, Pelin Deniz; Aslan Akman, Canan; Department of Latin and North American Studies (2015)
In this thesis, the democratic transformation in Venezuela during the President Chávez period (1999 – 2013) is analyzed by adopting a middle-range democracy approach which brings socio-economic equality and social rights back into the quality of democracy analysis. The study identified a paradox of the democratic transition in Venezuela in this period which arose from, on the one hand, the tension between the weakening horizontal and vertical accountability mechanisms and, on the other hand, improvements on...
Back-to-roots again? Kirchnerismo as a reclaiming of classical Peronism
Tekiner, Uğur (Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi (Ankara, Turkey), 2020-12)
This article seeks to examine how Kirchnerism emerged and then dominated Argentine politics as the most powerful strand of Peronism since the early-2000s. Based on an analysis of the political, socio-economic and organizational-leadership attributes of classical Peronism and Menemism, the major argument of this study is that Kirchnerism, with its center-left agenda, has attempted to reclaim traditional Peronism by highlighting its focus on political sovereignty, economic independence and social justice, in ...

Katırcı, Güldeniz; Aslan Akman, Canan; Department of Political Science and Public Administration (2006)
The main purpose of the thesis is to demonstrate whether or not the rapid rise and decline of radical nationalism between 1999 and 2002 elections may be related to an ideological identity crisis of the Nationalist Action Party. In this context, the focus will be on the transformation of the nationalist ideology, “nationalisms” in the Ottoman Empire, Kemalist/official nationalism, and transformation of Turkish nationalism to a political party ideology and its further transformation in Turkey. The reason for ...
The Neoliberal Discourse on Corruption as a Means of Consent Building: reflections from post-crisis Turkey
Bedirhanoğlu Toker, Pınar (2007-01-01)
This article draws attention to the ideological role that the neoliberal discourse on corruption has fulfilled in the promotion of the second generation reforms in Southern countries since the 1997 East Asian financial crisis. This discourse is ahistoric insofar as it fails to recognise corruption as a problem of modernity; biased insofar as it associates corruption with Southern countries' historical and cultural specificities only; contradictory in terms of its counter-productive anti-corruption strategie...
