EUROPT, the Continuous Optimization working group of EURO, celebrated its 20 years of activity in 2020. We trace the history of this working group by presenting the major milestones that have led to its current structure and organization and its major trademarks, such as the annual EUROPT workshop and the EUROPT Fellow recognition.

Equity-efficiency implications of a European tax and transfer system
Gürer, Eren (2021-8-01)
This study simulates three income tax scenarios in a Mirrleesian setting for 24 EU countries using data from the 2014 Structure of Earnings Survey. In scenario 1, each country individually maximizes its own welfare (benchmark). In scenarios 2 and 3, total welfare in the EU is maximized over a common budget constraint. Unlike scenario 2, the social planner of scenario 3 differentiates taxes by country of residence. If a common tax and transfer system were implemented in the EU, countries with a relatively hi...
Causal relationship between construction investment policy and economic growth in Turkey
Ozkan, Filiz; Ozkan, Omer; Gunduz, Murat (Elsevier BV, 2012-02-01)
The construction industry in countries experiencing severe economic crisis has vital importance to get out of stagnation because of its direct relations with 200 different sectors. In this study, the relationship between the construction growth data (infrastructure, building and residential (public), building and residential (private) investment) and gross domestic product (GDP) is examined for Turkey. To this end, Engle-Granger cointegration, error correction model (ECM) and Granger causality tests were ap...
Comparison of 2D and 3D image-based aggregate morphological indices
Kutay, M. Emin; Öztürk, Hande Işık; Abbas, Ala R.; Hu, Chichun (2011-01-01)
Significant progress has been made over the last two decades in the characterisation of aggregate shape using automated image analysis and processing methods. Aggregate shape characteristics have been quantified using three distinct shape parameters, namely the aggregate form, angularity and surface texture. Several mathematical procedures have been developed to quantify these parameters. For practical reasons, most of these procedures were limited to two-dimensional (2D) and utilised 2D aggregate images. T...
Re-measuring the natural interest rate for the Turkish economy: Does using the new GDP series matter?
Us, Vuslat (Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi (Ankara, Turkey), 2018-4)
The Turkish Statistical Institute announced a new GDP series in Turkey at end-2016, which produced a remarkable upward revision in real GDP growth during the 2009-2015 period. The divergence between the old and the new series also pointed to a higher potential output, bringing the possibility that the deviation of output from its potential, i.e. the output gap has changed in the meantime. This necessitated the re-estimation of some indicators, the measurement of which is based on GDP, potential output ...
Challenges and Benefits of the Use of AASHTOWare for 3 Climatic Regions in Turkey
İpekyüz, Beyhan; Tüydeş Yaman, Hediye; Öztürk, Hande Işık (2022-9-01)
The economic growth in developing countries triggers investments in highway networks. Thus, this requires a re-evaluation of existing design practices, which are mostly empirical. An alternative is the relatively recently developed Mechanistic-Empirical (M-E) design method. It has major data challenges and must be identified before a major switch. In this study, three different climatic regions for Turkey were analyzed optimizing 162 design combinations. Results showed that climate, traffic, and reliability...
