In this work, a pattern reconfigurable antenna with improved pattern diversity is proposed. The antenna is formed by placing a circular ring around a circular microstrip patch antenna and excited by using two feeds. The in-phase and out-of-phase excitation of these feeds provides conical beam and broadside radiation, respectively. Slots are introduced to the ground plane of the antenna to steer the main radiation direction in broadside radiation mode and to obtain asymmetric radiation in conical beam mode. Consequently, the pattern diversity of the two-mode antenna is improved.

Beam Switching Reflectarray Monolithically Integrated With RF MEMS Switches
Bayraktar, Omer; Aydın Çivi, Hatice Özlem; Akın, Tayfun (2012-02-01)
A reflectarray antenna monolithically integrated with 90 RF MEMS switches has been designed and fabricated to achieve switching of the main beam. Aperture coupled microstrip patch antenna (ACMPA) elements are used to form a 10 x 10 element reconfigurable reflectarray antenna operating at 26.5 GHz. The change in the progressive phase shift between the elements is obtained by adjusting the length of the open ended transmission lines in the elements with the RF MEMS switches. The reconfigurable reflectarray is...
Analysis and design of microstrip patch antennas with arbitrary slot shapes
Şener, Göker; Alatan, Lale; Kuzuoğlu, Mustafa; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2011)
A new method is proposed that provides simple and effcient design and analysis algorithm for microstrip antennas with arbitrary patch shapes. The proposed procedure uses the mutiport network model (MNM) where the antenna is considered as a cavity bounded by perfect electric conductors on the top and the bottom surfaces and perfect magnetic conductor on the side surfaces. Ports are defined along the periphery of the patch, and the impedance matrix representing the voltage induced at one port due to a current...
Design of pattern reconfigurable antenna employing RF-MEMS switches
Gök, Çağlar; Alatan, Lale; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2022-8-17)
In this thesis, the design, simulations, fabrication and measurements of reconfigurable antennas for use in 5G Massive MIMO systems are presented. 26 GHz is chosen as the operating frequency and RF-MEMS switches are used as control elements for pattern reconfiguration. As a first step, a patch antenna is designed based on the excitation of different operation modes of different resonators. A circular patch in the center and a ring resonator structure around it are used to create different radiation patterns...
Frequency tunable microstrip patch antenna using RF MEMS technology
Erdıl, Emre; Topallı, Kagan; Unlu, Mehmet; Aydın Çivi, Hatice Özlem; Akın, Tayfun (2007-04-01)
A novel reconfigurable microstrip patch antenna is presented that is monolithically integrated with RF microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) capacitors for tuning the resonant frequency. Reconfigurability of the operating frequency of the microstrip patch antenna is achieved by loading it with a coplanar waveguide (CPW) stub on which variable MEMS capacitors are placed periodically. MEMS capacitors are implemented with surface micromachining technology, where a 1-mu m thick aluminum structural layer is plac...
Amplitude Tapering Scheme for Through-Element Coupled Antenna Arrays
Miran, Emre Alp; Koç, Seyit Sencer (2016-07-01)
A new approach is proposed to achieve appropriate amplitude distribution for series-fed linear microstrip patch antenna arrays. Through element coupled patches are further investigated to attain more control on the level of the transmitted signal through the antenna elements. Power coupled to the next element is controlled by adjusting the size of the coupling region (CR) and the width of the gap to accomplish amplitude tapering. An empirical formulation is obtained through parametric analysis which can be ...
