Due to environmental issues such as emission of carbon gases and depleting natural resources, Electric Vehicles (EVs) are attracting more attention. To make EVs viable and widespread, the batteries' high cost and performance degradation problems have to be overcome. The degradation of the battery both in terms of energy capacity and power capability is highly dependent on conditions of utilization. To understand the relationship between energy utilization and battery size, an electric vehicle model that is used to obtain energy utilization is combined with a battery ageing model that considers both calendar and cycle ageing. First, the coefficients of the battery ageing model are updated with the help of real ageing data. Secondly, the electric vehicle model is validated considering a Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) in the market. Then, the battery size is optimized to reduce the total cost of the powertrain and consumed energy over the battery's lifespan considering Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP). Finally, the effects of possible future improvements in the technology and alterations in user preferences on the battery size optimization are investigated.

OPTIMAL BATTERY SIZING FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES CONSIDERING BATTERY AGEING TO MINIMIZE THE TOTAL COST OF THE POWER TRAIN COMPONENTS AND CONSUMED ENERGY
Gezer, Ali; Ünver, Baki Zafer; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2021-8-04)
Due to environmental issues such as emission of carbon gases, massive energy consumption, depleting natural resources regarding the internal combustion engine (ICE) based vehicles, electric vehicles (EVs) have caught more and more attention. To make EVs feasible and common, the batteries' high cost and performance degradation problems have to be overcome. The degradation of the battery regarding both energy capacity and power capability is highly dependent on conditions of utilization. Inspired by the liter...
Assessment of impacts of electric vehicles on low voltage distribution networks in Turkey
Temiz, Armağan; Güven, Ali Nezih; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2015)
The number of Electric Vehicles (EVs) has reached a substantial value all over the globe due to economic and environmental factors. The increasing penetration of EVs to the distribution grids urges the requirement to investigate the impacts of EVs on the planning and operation of distribution networks. Despite the fact that there are numerous studies discussing the impacts of EVs on distribution grids, a particular study concerning the Turkish distribution networks does not exist. Therefore, this study focu...
Electric Vehicle Key Technology Research in China
Wen, Xuhui; Xiao, Chengwei (2011-09-10)
Electrification is regarded as the mainstream for future automobile power-train in order to cope with the impending energy and environmental problems. The technology of electric vehicle (EV), including battery powered vehicle, hybrid vehicle and fuel cell vehicle, has been investigated thoroughly for more than two decades in China. Many remarkable progresses have been achieved. In this paper, the It & D of electric vehicle technology in China are introduced. Both battery and motor development for electric v...
Improvement in dye sensitized solar cells from past to present
Mohiuddin, Obaidullah; Obaidullah, Madina; Sabah, Cumali (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2018-10-01)
Several emerging renewable technologies are available to satisfy the current energy demand and to minimize the effect of environmental degradation caused by high consumption of fossil fuels. These technologies are not mature enough to solve this problem but require more time for improving the efficiency, and cost reduction to become the economical alternative of fossil fuels. In this paper Dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) has been discussed in detail owing to advancement in the technology. Since each compon...
Monte Carlo based control algorithm for economic feasibility of V2G applications
Şahinkaya, Kıvanç; Güven, Ali Nezih; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2019)
The use of electric vehicles (EVs) has been increasing in recent years due to economic and environmental factors. This rapid development makes it necessary to investigate the effects EVs on the power system planning and system participants. The aim of this study is to determine the optimal operating strategy for a microgrid operator which can function as a prosumer with the contribution of vehicle to grid (V2G) application. The connection time, plug-in time and state of charge (SoC) of EVs are stochastic va...
