The historical change of Gross Domestic Product per capita (GDP) values of countries with the thirty largest economies was analyzed by using different entropies, (i) topological entropy, (ii) Shannon entropy, and (iii) configurational entropy. Topological entropy was used to analyze the number of periodic points of each ranking, and five segments corresponded to economic crises in the first ranking. The behavior in each segment could be described by polynomial equations. In all other rankings, the segments distorted to varying extents. Shannon entropy was used to analyze the entropy of each ranking and also the yearly change of the entropy of each country from 1960 to 2020. The negentropy change of each country was also analyzed. By the end of 2020, one country had equal entropy and negentropy, twelve countries had larger, and seventeen countries had smaller entropies than their negentropy. There was a close similarity between the change of topological entropy and negentropy in any ranking, but topological entropy gave more precise information because it is dependent not only on the distribution of data but also on the sequence of GDP data of different countries. The 18th ranking was a critical ranking having very large topological entropy and negentropy. The GDPs of countries sharply dropped after the 18th ranking. The configurational entropy came out to be maximum at the minimum values of GDP, or vice versa. It usually started with a small negative value, and its magnitude became larger in time. However, there occurred severe fluctuations in many of the cases. It means the configurational entropy gets less negative (i.e. it increases) in time through fluctuations. Overall, the entropic analysis of the GDP values of countries provides quantitative information about how countries performed over the years. The methods used here can be applied to other time-series systems having similar dynamics to GDP, as well as to competitive systems.

Causal relationship between construction investment policy and economic growth in Turkey
Ozkan, Filiz; Ozkan, Omer; Gunduz, Murat (Elsevier BV, 2012-02-01)
The construction industry in countries experiencing severe economic crisis has vital importance to get out of stagnation because of its direct relations with 200 different sectors. In this study, the relationship between the construction growth data (infrastructure, building and residential (public), building and residential (private) investment) and gross domestic product (GDP) is examined for Turkey. To this end, Engle-Granger cointegration, error correction model (ECM) and Granger causality tests were ap...
Analysis of regional income inequalities of CEECs and Turkey in the light of EU regional policy instruments
Şen, Şener; Kayasü, Serap; Department of City and Regional Planning (2005)
The aim of this study is to determine regional income level and disparities in CEECs and Turkey in a comparison of new 26 NUTS-II regions for Turkey with 49 NUTS-II regions of CEECs in the period of 1995 and 2001 by using the indicator of GDP per capita in terms of purchasing power standard. In this study, furthermore, those questions have been discussed: whether the EU is a chance for reducing regional inequalities and growth of the regional wealth in Turkey, and whether Turkey is another thread for the EU...
Social capital, innovation and growth: Evidence from Europe
Akçomak, İbrahim Semih (2009-07-01)
This paper investigates the interplay between social capital, innovation and per capita income growth in the European Union. We model and identify innovation as an important mechanism that transforms social capital into higher income levels. In an empirical investigation of 102 European regions in the period 1990-2002, we show that higher innovation performance is conducive to per capita income growth and that social capital affects this growth indirectly by fostering innovation. Our estimates suggest that ...
Changing theory of urban consumption and geography of retailing - mapping the transformation of retail landscapes in İstanbul in the post - 1990 period: a perspective from developing countries
Boyacı, Yonca; Güvenç, Murat; Department of City and Regional Planning (2002)
After the 1980s, the re-organization of world markets through global penetration of western consumer values has extended the consumption functions of most economies creating new spaces of consumption. However, socio-economic and cultural forces have interpreted global economic processes in different ways in different countries, producing similar as well as contrasting compositions. Similarly in developing countries despite the penetration of global consumption values accompanied by a modernization of retail...
Institutional Environment, Economic Performance and Innovation in Turkey
Erdil, Erkan; Pamukcu, Mehmet Teoman (2015-01-01)
This paper investigates the relationship between economic performance and innovation in Turkey, while also taking into account the crucial mediating effect of the institutional environment. We carry out an in-depth analysis of the recent shifts in STI policy-making in Turkey. The emphasis is on the innovation support policy instruments, and their effectiveness, as well as on the formulation of national STI targets, sector priorities and targets in the field of human resources. A number of concerns are expre...
