The construction industry is one of the largest producers of waste. The Circular Economy Action Plan of the EU aims to tackle this issue and aspires to enhance the sustainability of the construction industry by adopting more circular principles and bio-based material use. For this purpose, an approach is being developed that facilitates coherence between technical, economical, legal, social aspects, and business models for circular design and building with bio-based materials in the Interreg Circular Bio-Based Construction Industry (CBCI) project. Within the scope of the project, tests and evaluations will be performed in a real-life setting, requiring the construction of a prototype house, the living lab (LL) located in Ghent. LL will be designed to incorporate circular principles like design-for-disassembly (DfD) and modular design, urban mining, reuse, use of recycled materials and compostable bio-based materials. In the search for circular construction methods a number of tools were used in an iterative process during the design phase of the living lab. In order to support the design process, an evaluation method is necessary to score the overall circularity. However, there is no standardized or well-established method to measure circularity. In this study, it is aimed to introduce a combination of existing tools on a case study. This approach should contribute to the creation of a holistic assessment of the circularity of the LL, which in turn will lead to buildings with circular material use by stimulating reuse, recycling and composting of bio-based building components.

An investigation into the implementation of construction automation and robotics technologies for construction waste management
Kılıçkan Öztürk, Sabire Melek; Elias Özkan, Soofia Tahira; Department of Architecture (2022-8)
The construction industry is responsible for tons of construction waste. It is crucial to take the necessary precautions to avoid the impacts of construction waste on the environment. With the help of developments in automation technology and building information modeling systems, robotics in the construction industry is getting more common every day. It is argued that construction robots can be effective in the management of construction waste. This study aims first to understand the reasons for construct...
Utilization of soda and beer wastes in cementitious systems
Aleessa Alam, Burhan; Yaman, İsmail Özgür; Department of Cement Engineering (2009)
To maintain the sustainability of cement and concrete production, there is a trend to use wastes in their production. Soda waste, generated by soda ash production process, and beer waste, generated by beer filtration process, are two locally produced wastes in Turkey and many other countries. The nature of these wastes, mostly their fineness, makes them possible to be used in concrete production, especially as a viscosity modifying agent in the self consolidating type of concrete. In this study, the additio...
Cement production by cement-bonded wood particleboard wastes
Yilmaz, Mustafa; Tokyay, Mustafa; Yaman, İsmail Özgür (2016-01-01)
To improve the sustainability of cement and concrete production, there is an increasing trend towards using industrial wastes throughout their production processes. The aim is to find new resources that can be used in any step of cement and concrete production and to find solutions to many problems related to the disposal of wastes. This article discusses the use of wastes generated from cement-bonded wood particle board (CB) manufacturing in cement production. CB waste, which basically contains wood chips ...
Assessing risk management maturity : a framework for the construction companies
Öngel, Begüm; Tanyer, Ali Murat; Department of Building Science in Architecture (2009)
Due to its complex nature, risk and uncertainty are more widespread in construction industry than many other industries. Aiming to ensure that all project objectives are met, risk management is considered as a critical success factor for construction projects. The core elements of risk management are now known and used by many organizations. On the other hand, as declared by Project Management Institute (PMI), the ability to measure the effectiveness in managing risk is one of the most important areas that ...
Development of an IT-based tool for portfolio assessment and management for construction companies
Bilgin, Gözde; Dikmen Toker, İrem; Özorhon Orakçal, Beliz; Department of Civil Engineering (2019)
Development in the construction industry has leaded most of the construction companies to undertake more complex projects than before, which are generally executed concurrently. Therefore, project management routines of the companies may not support effective management of multi-projects. Project portfolio management approach has been suggested to meet requirements for coordinating multi-projects to meet strategic objectives under limited resources. Since project portfolio management requires a comprehensiv...
