Algal treatment of pulp and paper industry wastewaters in SBR systems
Tarlan, E; Yetiş, Ülkü; Dilek, Filiz Bengü (2002-01-01)
Highly colored and highly polluted pulp and paper industry wastewaters are proposed to be treated by using algae in sequential batch reactors (SBR). Results of batch studies revealed that up to 74% COD; 74% color removal could be attained in about 40 days of incubation, From the preliminary SBR experiments, filling period was found to be a critical step affecting the overall efficiency when mixing and aeration is applied during filling. Therefore, 5 different filling periods (4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 days) were s...
Evaluation of dewatered and partially dried sewage sludge combustion based on energy balance and carbon footprint
Calbay, Emin; Aksoy, Ayşegül; Sanin, Faika Dilek; Department of Environmental Engineering (2018)
Aim of this thesis is to evaluate dewatered (wet) and partially dried sludge combustion, based on energy balance, carbon footprint and cost estimations. Thermal processes have advantage of converting sludge into energy. Transition from environmentally risky disposal methods to environmentally friendly innovative thermal processes is crucial. Until innovative technologies are proven to be robust and efficient, mono-incineration is evaluated as the transition technology in sludge management. Sufficient data a...
Life cycle assessment of evaporative recovery of mercerization wastewater
Bayar, Eda; Yetiş, Ülkü; Department of Environmental Engineering (2015)
The products of textile industry are irrevocable part of our lives: clothes, carpets, towels etc. However, textile industry is known to be having impact on the environment, especially for its high levels of water consumption and waste generation. The European Union’s Industrial Emissions Directive (former IPPC Directive) requires industrial establishments to apply best available techniques (BAT) both in the production processes and in the waste treatment and disposal. The European IPPC Bureau (EIPPCB) produ...
Synthetic biology approach for the design of butyrate producing bacteria for colon cancer therapy
Kızıl, Cihat Burak; Banerjee, Sreeparna; Department of Biology (2019)
Butyric acid is a short chain fatty acid (SCFA) that is generated in the colon by butyrate-producing bacteria. Butyrate, along with other SCFAs, serve as substrates for energy production in the gut epithelium. Additionally, these compounds are known to reduce inflammation and enhance differentiation of mammalian cells. Several species of bacteria are known to produce butyrate in the gut through different biochemical pathways. In this study we have aimed to generate a butyrate producing commensal E. coli K12...
