Distribution of dissolved forms of iron and manganese in the Black Sea
YEMENİCİOĞLU, SEMAL; Erdogan, Selahattin; Tuğrul, Süleyman (Elsevier BV, 2006-01-01)
Dissolved forms of the redox-sensitive elements manganese (Mn-DISS) and iron (Fe(II) and Fe(III)) were measured in the oxic/anoxic transition zone, or suboxic zone, of the Black Sea. An offset was found between dissolved manganese and iron gradients at all stations. In the western cyclonic gyre of the Black Sea, the onset of dissolved Mn (> 0.1 mu M) was located at a density of about sigma(t) = 15.85, where the concentration of dissolved oxygen (DO) was less than 5 mu M. The onset of dissolved Fe(II) (> 0.0...
Comparision of in situ and satellite-derived chlorophyll pigment concentrations, and impact of phytoplankton bloom on the suboxic layer structure in the western Black Sea during May-June 2001
Oguz, Temel; Ediger, Dilek (Elsevier BV, 2006-01-01)
CTD and chlorophyll data collected during May-June 2001 RN. Knorr and June 2001 RN. Bilim cruises have been complemented by satellite altimeter sea-level anomaly, AVHRR sea-surface temperature and SeaWiFS chlorophyll data sets in order to infer temporal evolution and spatial variability of the circulation, water mass, and chlorophyll pigment concentration in the western Black Sea. Four specific features of the upper layer water-column physical and biogeochemical structures have been addressed in the present...
Optimal management of coastal aquifers using heuristic algorithms
Demirbaş, Korkut; Altan Sakarya, Ayşe Burcu; Önder, Halil; Department of Civil Engineering (2011)
Excessive pumping in coastal aquifers results in seawater intrusion where optimal and efficient planning is essential. In this study, numerical solution of single potential solution by Strack is combined with genetic algorithm (GA) to find the maximum extraction amount in a coastal aquifer. Seawater intrusion is tracked with the potential value at the extraction well locations. A code is developed by combining GA and a subroutine repeatedly calling MODFLOW as a numerical solver to calculate the potential di...
Effect of different flours on quality of gluten-free wafer sheet
Mert, Selen; Şahin, Serpil; Şümnü, Servet Gülüm; Department of Food Engineering (2014)
Lifelong gluten-free diet is essential for patients having celiac disease. Since wheat flour contains gluten, it is necessary to replace wheat flour with other types of gluten-free flours. Rice flour is commonly used in gluten-free baked products as an alternative to wheat flour. The main objective of this study was to develop gluten-free wafer sheet formulations by replacing rice flour partially with different gluten-free flours at different ratios. Rice-corn flour blends, rice-buckwheat flour blends and r...
Interannual variability of the early summer coccolithophore blooms in the Black Sea: impacts of climatic factors
Cokacar, T; Oguz, T; Kubilay, N (2003-08-06)
Interannual variability of the early summer (May-June) coccolithophore blooms within surface waters of the Black Sea was studied by means of satellite-based bio-optical observations. The performance of two coccolithophore detection algorithms were tested for Black Sea conditions, and were found to provide comparable spatial patterns consistent with the corresponding true color images. An analysis of six, year-long OCTS and SeaWiFS imagery from 1997 onwards points to the presence of a major phytoplankton blo...
