Investigation of variations in performance properties of asphalt concrete using image-based finite element model
Karakaya, Yalçın; Güler, Murat; Department of Civil Engineering (2022-7-20)
The objective of this study is to evaluate variations in performance properties of asphalt concrete using a two-dimensional image-based finite element model. Two different asphalt mixtures are used in both laboratory tests and in FEM analyses representing different conditions. A flatbed scanner is then used to capture cross-sectional images of the samples and various image processing techniques are applied to prepare the images for FEM. A unique image vectorization method has been developed to transform cro...
Investigation of desalination performance of capacitive deionization technology
Özkul, Selin; İmamoğlu, İpek; Ünalan, Hüsnü Emrah; Department of Environmental Engineering (2019)
Capacitive deionization (CDI) is one of the emerging technologies developed with the purpose of water desalination. CDI technology is based on ion electrosorption at the surface of electrically charged electrode couples that are commonly comprised of porous carbon materials. Along with the continuous increase in the global fresh water demand, CDI technology becomes more prominent as an energy efficient and cost-effective water purification process. In this study, ion removal capacity of the CDI process was ...
Investigation of microstructure-ultrasonic velocity relationship in SiCp-reinforced aluminium metal matrix composites
Gür, Cemil Hakan (Elsevier BV, 2003-11-25)
Twenty-one sets of specimens were fabricated by hot pressing powder mixtures containing various volume and size combinations of pure Al and SiC particles. Neither heat treatment nor secondary deformation processes were applied. The microstructures of the specimens were characterised by optical and scanning electron microscopy. Using a 10 MHz probe, the velocity of ultrasonic longitudinal waves was measured. The results show that in general the ultrasonic velocity increases with an increase in SiC content. H...
INVESTIGATION OF PUNCHING SHEAR DESIGN APPROACHES IN TURKISH BUILDING EARTHQUAKE SPECIFICATION FOR INTERIOR SLAB-COLUMN CONNECTIONS
Özden, Mustafa Yavuz; Binici, Barış; Department of Civil Engineering (2023-1)
Flat plate sytems are very critical due to possible punching failure at slab-column connections. Importance of having reliable design and guidelines on punching shear design of slab-column connections under lateral loads have been shown in the past for zones under high seismic risk. In the new Turkish Building Earthquake Specification published at 2018, there are two different method to analyze slab-column connections. First one is eccentric shear stress model which is also included in ACI 318-19. Second on...
