This thesis addresses the issue of gender equality in the broadest sense. Taking the example of women's cooperatives as a rural development initiative, it aims to analyze the challenges women (and men) face living and working in rural areas (both on and off the farm). The goal is to identify firsthand the social, economic, and cultural barriers to equality between women and men. Therefore, this thesis sought to hear how a specific group of women represents themselves in a particular location. That is, to listen to women themselves talk about the inequalities and adversities they experience, their responses to them, their struggles, and their coping efforts. Based on the notion that potentially rural development initiatives can enhance gender equality, I discuss the impact of development projects on the relative status and empowerment of rural women in Turkey from a gender and women's perspective. Mainly, I examine the impact of development projects implemented within the context of restructuring agriculture and rural areas. The lives and work of women who are members of this cooperative are examined in terms of evolving gender relations at the micro level under the influence of more extensive global forces.
