In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) tools have seen a significant development and entered many areas of our lives. Sources of inspiration related to design, current news channels, and social media pages share visuals and texts produced through these tools. It is also observed that these tools are extensively used among professionals. Recently, AI tools have started to be included in design processes within companies. This study explores the usage of AI tools within the design process, particularly for creativity, among design professionals. The study follows two phases. In Phase 1, ten AI tools, popular on social media among design professionals, have been reviewed. In Phase 2, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 professionals who incorporate creativity into their design processes and benefit from AI tools, to gain in-depth insights into their design and creative processes and understand how they leverage AI tools within these processes. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis, revealing 8 categories and 28 themes. Participants’ design flows were schematically expressed and coded, based on which, a common design flow model, the Origami model, was created. AI tools were mapped on this model, indicating where they fit into the process. The study revealed that AI tools are used throughout the entire design process and have various impacts on creative processes. Additionally, it emerged that participants also benefit from AI tools in their daily lives. Insights about the skill sets that designers need to integrate with the rapid development of these tools have been revealed. Furthermore, the findings show that designers are assuming new roles with the evolving AI tools. Finally, this study indicates that designers have various reservations about AI tools.
