Urbanisation Trends in Underdeveloped Countries Izmir in Historical Perspective: The study aims at showing the changes in the physical setting of the city of Izmir in response to changing economic atructure and relations of the region. Although there are some allusions to the earlier periods, the period under study is really the XI X th and the early X X th centuries. The old town reflected the economic and social organization where production and trade are strictly controlled by the Ottoman bureaucracy: relatively low level of trade, specially of overseas trade and market integration achieved on regional scale. With the introduction of railways transportation, not only production for the market is initiated but also, production for European markets became dominant. Social change at the producing willage level is kept at a minimum but still the nev pattern of trans portation and trade create new dominating social forces, mainly foreign companies and this development sweeps away the old Ottoman bureaucratic controls. These changes can be followed clearly in the development of the harbour and the surrounding areas, in the location and architecture of houses of different social groups (civil servants surrendering the prestige areas to foreign consuls and merchants etc.) and scattering of different ethnic groups. But even more enlightening than the physical growth and allocation of the town is the way these changes occur and the accompan ying evolution of the social attitudes
