Temporal Development of Local Scour Around Bridge Abutments under a Stepwise Hydrograph

2024-06-05
In this experimental study, the temporal development of the local scour was investigated around the semi-circular end and rectangular bridge abutments under unsteady-state clear-water approach flow conditions in a rectangular sediment channel. A 6-hour stepwise hydrograph consisting of 3 different successive flow intensities, each applied continuously for 2 hours, was used to get unsteady-state approach flow conditions. During the experiments, 6 different abutment lengths with constant width were tested. Bed profiles around the abutments were recorded with a measurement device every 15 minutes to examine the temporal development of the local scour around the abutments. Effects of the abutment length and shape, flow intensity and test duration on the scour depths around abutments along with those at the front, upstream and downstream faces of the abutment were also examined. Based on experimental results, it was observed that flow intensity is the most critical parameter in scour development and the maximum scour depth was always recorded at the front noses of the abutments. In addition, for a given abutment length, flow conditions and test duration, the scour depths were always observed greater for the rectangular abutments than those for semi-circular end abutments.
