The discovery of clean and renewable energy sources has necessitated the advancement of efficient energy storage technologies and devices to ensure sustainable economic development. Batteries and supercapacitors play significant roles in the various electrochemical energy storage systems. Supercapacitors have emerged as a promising energy storage device between conventional capacitors and batteries. Conjugated polymers are known as promising materials for supercapacitor applications due to their unique electronic and structural properties. This review comprehensively presents the recent advancements in their utilization for supercapacitors, focusing on design strategies, synthesis, characterization, and electrochemical performance. The review begins by introducing supercapacitors, highlighting their advantages and limitations in comparison to batteries and comparing different energy storage mechanisms. It then discusses the various synthetic strategies employed to tailor the conjugated polymer structure to improve charge storage capacity and electrochromic properties. Furthermore, this work explores the critical considerations regarding device construction by offering examples of symmetric and asymmetric supercapacitors. It also provides an overview of recent applications of conjugated polymers in flexible and electrochromic supercapacitors to emphasize their potential for integration into future-generation energy storage devices. Finally, the outlook on the future directions and opportunities in the field of polymer-based supercapacitors is presented. Overall, this review provides valuable insights into the recent developments in the application of conjugated polymers for supercapacitors, shedding light on the current state of the art and paving the way for future research and improvements toward the design of new polymer architectures.
