Boosting collaboration in nuclear fission and fusion research ; The sustainability of nuclear energy relies on the deployment of Generation IV (GenIV) fission systems and thermonuclear fusion. Both GenIV fission and fusion technologies expose materials to high temperatures and irradiation levels, creating common material challenges. The EU-funded M4F project aims to promote collaboration between researchers engaged in nuclear fission and fusion material modelling and characterisation. The project will focus on ferritic/martensitic (F/M) steels, which have excellent radiation-induced swelling resistance and thermal properties but also pose certain challenges. M4F’s goals include developing predictive models for microstructure evolution and deformation under irradiation in F/M steels, as well as developing a methodology to use ion irradiation to assess radiation effects on materials.
