Evaluation of visual quality metrics
Ölgün, Ramazan Ferhat; Akar, Gözde; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2011)
The aim of this study is to work on the visual quality metrics that are widely accepted in literature, to evaluate them on different distortion types and to give a comparison of overall performances in terms of prediction accuracy, monotonicity, consistency and complexity. The algorithms behind the quality metrics in literature and parameters used for quality metric performance evaluations are studied. This thesis also includes the explanation of Human Visual System, classification of visual quality metrics...
The role of familiarity on change perception
Karacan, Hacer; Çağıltay, Kürşat; Department of Cognitive Sciences (2007)
In this study the mechanisms that control attention in natural scenes was examined. It was explored whether familiarity with the environment makes participants more sensitive to changes or novel events in the scene. Previous investigation of this issue has been based on viewing 2D pictures/images of simple objects or of natural scenes, a situation which does not accurately reflect the challenges of natural vision. In order to examine this issue, as well as the differences between 2D and 3D environments, two...
Analysis of the Problem Based Learning Implementations Students and Tutors Perceptions and Actions
Ateş, Özlem; Eryılmaz, Ali (2015-03-01)
This study aims to analyze the implementation of problem-based learning (PBL) in engineering education regarding perceptions and actions of tutors and students. A case study design was employed in this study. To this end, four tutors, their five PBL modules, and fourteen students were selected. Observations and interviews were used to collect qualitative data. The results indicated that there was a difference between participants’ perception of PBL and their actions during tutorials. Participants’ level of ...
Visual object representations: effects of feature frequency and similarity
Eren Kanat, Selda; Hohenberger, Annette Edeltraud; Department of Cognitive Sciences (2011)
The effects of feature frequency and similarity on object recognition have been examined through behavioral experiments, and a model of the formation of visual object representations and old/new recognition has been proposed. A number of experiments were conducted to test the hypothesis that frequency and similarity of object features affect the old/new responses to test stimuli in a later recognition task. In the first experiment, when the feature frequencies are controlled, there was a significant increas...
EXPERIMENTAL STUDY AND FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS OF DOVETAIL ATTACHMENTS
Akay, Ahmet Arda; Çöker, Demirkan; Kayran, Altan; Gürses, Ercan (2017-11-09)
In this study, the contact stresses in the dovetail-rim region of an aero-engine compressor disc under the action of the centrifugal forces of the blades are investigated. Dovetail-rim consists of two parts: the blade and the disc. Highly stressed areas occur at the edges of the interface of the disc and the blade during the operation. Fretting fatigue is commonly seen in dovetails, which is caused by high stress gradients. An experimental setup which is capable of performing tension test on a dovetail rim ...
