Effects of off-center angle on the heat transfer coefficient on vertical tier of multiple spherical surfaces
Kaya, Ebubekir; Yamalı, Cemil; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2004)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the laminar film condensation phenomenon of steam on a vertical tier of multiple spherical surfaces by using both analytical and experimental methods. The analytical heat transfer results were obtained by following the Nusselt type of analysis and represented graphically. In addition, in order to observe the real behavior of the film condensation, an experimental setup was manufactured and experiments were done. In analytical section; mass flow rate, (mean) veloci...
3d modeling and ground motion scaling for the prediction of seismic demands on the gravity dams
Bybordiani, Milad; Arıcı, Yalın; Department of Civil Engineering (2016)
Seismic behavior of gravity dams has long been evaluated using the classical two dimensional modeling approach and time history analyses the assumptions for which have been rarely challenged. Formulated for the gravity dams built in wide-canyons, 2D modeling is utilized extensively for almost all concrete dams due to the established procedures as well as the expected computational costs of a three dimensional model. However, a significant number of roller compacted concrete (RCC) dams, characterized as such...
Enhancement of the bottoming cycle in a gas/steam combined cycle power plant
Safyel, Zerrin; Yeşin, Tülay; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2005)
A combined cycle gas/steam power plant combines a gas turbine (topping cycle) with a steam power plant (bottoming cycle) through the use of a heat recovery steam generator. It uses the hot exhaust of the gas turbine to produce steam which is used to generate additional power in the steam power plant. The aim of this study is to establish the different bottoming cycle performances in terms of the main parameters of heat recovery steam generator and steam cycle for a chosen gas turbine cycle. First of all; fo...
Assessment of performance of drainage systems in earth-fill dams
Yılmaz, Ahsen Nur; Yanmaz, Ali Melih; Çalamak, Melih; Department of Civil Engineering (2017)
Earth-fill dams are exposed to seepage throughout their lifetime. In many cases, seepage related safety precautions needed are to be taken to keep seepage rate and pore water pressures below certain limits. This is commonly handled by installation of drainage facilities which are blanket, chimney and toe drains. This study is aimed at finding suitability and the effectiveness of drainage facilities in earth-fill dams. For this purpose, various materials and geometries are considered for different drain type...
Ultrasonic frequencies calculated for the q[100] mode in the first-order, tricritical and the second-order phase transitions of NH4Cl
Yurtseven, Hasan Hamit (2001-06-01)
This study correlates the volume changes to the ultrasonic frequencies of the q[100] mode of NH4Cl for the first-order, tricritical and the second-order phase transitions in this crystal. Using these correlations we were able to calculate the ultrasonic frequencies of this mode at the pressures of 0, 0.6 and 1.1 kbar (first-order), 1.6 kbar (tricritical) and 2.15 kbar (second-order) by means of the volume change data from the literature. Our calculated frequencies are in good agreement with the observed dat...
