Ore-age: a hybrid system for assisting and teaching mining method selection
Guray, C; Celebi, N; Atalay, Mehmet Volkan; Pasamehmetoglu, AG (2003-04-01)
Mining method selection is among the most critical and problematic points in mining engineering profession. Choosing a suitable method for a given ore-body is very important for the economics, safety and the productivity of the mining work. In the past studies there are attempts to build up a systematic approach to help the engineers to make this selection. But, these approaches work based on static databases and fail in inserting the intuitive feelings and engineering judgments of experienced engineers to ...

Coastal scenic evaluation: A study of some dalmatian (Croatia) areas
Ergin, Ayşen; Micallef, A.; Radic, M.; Williams, A. T. (2006-12-01)
Many scenic assessments have been carried out on a subjective base. A novel technique addressed scenic evaluation, through application of fuzzy logic methodologies to values obtained from a checklist that itemized 26 physical and human parameters. These parameters, obtained by consultation with coastal experts and users, were rated on a five-point attribute scale, covering presence/absence or poor quality (1), to excellent/outstanding (5). These attributes, subjected to fuzzy logic analyses producing matric...
Flooding analysis and slope stability assessment due to a confined aquifer in the Elbistan-Çöllolar open cast mine
Yoncacı, Selin; Tutluoğlu, Levent; Department of Mining Engineering (2009)
Groundwater can be a critical issue to be considered in civil engineering, mining engineering and interdisciplinary fields. Karstic structures and aquifers enclosing groundwater are potential risks in case they are not studied in detail. Enclosed groundwater can result in floods at pit bottom or can cause instabilities of permanent pit slopes. This study is about analyses of flooding possibility at the pit bottom and possible instabilities of pit slopes in the Elbistan-Çöllolar open cast coal mine due to th...
Coastal scenery: Appreciation and evaluation
Ergin, Ayşen; Micallef, A. (2006-07-01)
Twenty-six parameters have been selected that delineate coastal scenery. These were obtained via consultation between coastal users and experts in the field. The parameters were assessed as to their priorities and weightings given. Application of fuzzy logic techniques enabled a decision parameter (D) to be calculated for any coastal scene. Over 100 worldwide coastal sites were analysed via the technique and a five-class differentiation obtained from D values.
