This thesis analyzes the Stalinist great purges and the penal system, and the case of the Kazak intelligentsia in a historical context. The method of induction, historical and statistical analysis were used in the writing of thesis. Stalin's personality and "personality cult," the nature and scale of the repressions, institutional structure including the NKVD and the Gulag, as well as the Kazak society and Kazak intellectuals, their ideas, tendencies and works were discussed. The thesis also seeks to answer questions such as what was the idea behind the purges and penalties, why were the Kazak intellectuals repressed and how did this process affect the Kazak intelligentsia.
