Baroque tendencies in contemporary architecture
Kurtoğlu, Dilşad; Savaş Sargın, Ayşen; Department of Architecture (2014)
Recently, there has been a significant interest in the term “baroque”. The term has been explored by scholars as a concept that provokes new ways of historical conceptualization in contemporary culture and artistic productions. As it is observable that in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, many phenomena that are commonly associated with the seventeenth century Baroque, such as theatrical effects, excess, complex forms, curved and bulging surfaces, illusionistic, even decorative devices, t...
Nanoscale Thermal Transport in Single, Bilayer Graphene, and Graphite
Gholivand, Hamed; Donmezer, Nazli (2016-10-12)
In this study, ab-initio calculations were performed to obtain phonon dispersions of single, bilayer graphene, and graphite structures. Using these dispersions single mode relaxation times, thermal conductivities, and mean free paths (MFPs) have been calculated. Finally, calculated variables were used to understand the effects of additional layers to thermophysical properties, phonon mode contributions to thermal conductivity, and the limits for ballistic-diffusive heat transfer of single, bilayer graphene,...

Historical contuinity: three modernist masters, their precedents and descendants
Mollazadeh, Aslı; Balamir, Aydan; Department of Architecture (2014)
The aim of this thesis is to uncover the relation between the concept of historical continuity and architectural modernism. Modernism in architecture has often been conceived as a movement that rejects history. The buildings of modernist masters have been seen alien to their environments and the cultural values of the society. Although there have been many studies disproving this widespread opinion, the continuing effects of modernist works on today's architectural environment haven't been fully understood....
Architecture as an urban and social sign : understanding the nature of urban transformation in Eskişehir highway, Ankara
Bonjaku Gökdemir, Ornela; Güzer, Celal Abdi; Restoration in Department of Architecture (2009)
The buildings of a city such as shopping malls, plazas, world trade centers, hotels or even residential complexes are not only alternative urban building typologies but they represent power in social, economical, political and even religious terms. In this sense buildings should not be seen as specific design and research areas limited with single building scale but rather should be seen as urban statements in city scale. However the eclectic existence of these buildings in urban fabric causes a series of u...
