Computerized data visualization and analysis tools, especially Geographic Information Systems (GIS), constitute an important part of today̕s water resources development and management studies. In order to obtain satisfactory results from such tools, accurate and comprehensive hydrography datasets are needed that include both spatial and hydrologic information on surface water resources and watersheds. If present, such datasets may support many applications, such as hydrologic and environmental modeling, impact assessment, and construction planning. The primary purposes of this study are production of prototype national hydrography and watershed datasets for Turkey, and development of GIS-based tools for the analysis of local water quality and quantity data. For these purposes national hydrography datasets and analysis systems of several counties are reviewed, and based on gained experience; 1) Sub-watershed boundaries of 26 major national basins are derived from digital elevation model of the country by using raster-based analysis methods and these watersheds are named according to coding system of the European Union, 2) A prototype hydrography dataset with built-in connectivity and water flow direction information is produced from publicly available data sources, 3) GIS based spatial tools are developed to facilitate navigation through streams and watersheds in the hydrography dataset, and 4) A state-of-the art GIS-based stream flow and water quality data analysis system is developed, which is based on the structure of nationally available data and includes advanced statistical and spatial analysis capabilities. All datasets and developed tools are gathered in a single graphical user-interface within GIS and made available to the end-users.

Weighted multi-visibility analysis on directional paths
Şeker, Çağıl; Toprak, Vedat; Department of Geodetic and Geographical Information Technologies (2010)
Visibility analysis is an important GIS tool that is used in a diverse array of disciplines ranging from earth sciences to telecommunications. Multi-visibility, as a cumulative type of visibility, combines many point-to-point results into a multi-value array. Points, lines, or areas can be used as sources or targets; and the combined values can be calculated in both ways. Through multi-visibility, a special 2.5D visibility value surface can be constructed over a digital elevation model. The effectiveness of...
A topological system for codification of river basins in Turkey
Ulucan, İbrahim; Akyürek, Sevda Zuhal; Department of Geodetic and Geographical Information Technologies (2021-6-23)
Recently, owing to incredible development in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and software fields, besides effectively using the network and topology instruments, great advances have been made in the field of hydrologic coding through robust interaction among multidisciplinary sciences. If all hydrological properties can be combined in a network that has its own sui generis situation and topological properties, meaningful and holistic analyses can be formed more easily. Additionally, GIS topology is an ...
Geographic information systems (GIS) for the determination of inundation maps of Lake Mogan, Turkey
Merzi, N; Aktas, MT (Informa UK Limited, 2000-09-01)
The use of geographic information systems (GIS) allows for a very efficient analysis of spatial hydrologic data for water resources projects especially for water control studies. rn this respect, flood hydrographs for Mogan basin, Turkey for different durations and return periods are determined by using Soil Conservation Service (SCS) method. The basic parameter of the SCS method, curve number (CN), is evaluated by using GIS employing digital land use and hydrologic soil group data derived from analog maps....
Evaluating geoportals
Con, Eren; Akyürek, Sevda Zuhal; Department of Geodetic and Geographical Information Technologies (2014)
The idea of sharing data is the most important element for geographic information infrastructure, data standards and quality. To achieve this; building spatial data infrastructure, sharing and the presentation of the data concepts are available throughout the world. Following the production of data, there are specific standards such as ISO TC/211, INSPIRE and OGC to define rules and procedures of data sharing. Following the production of the data within certain standards, it is important to reach the data t...
Integration of geophysical - geological data using geographic information systems
Şirinyıldız, Tunç; Toprak, Vedat; Department of Geodetic and Geographical Information Technologies (2003)
This study attempts to integrate geophysical data with other spatial data using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The study is carried out in a part of Galatean Volcanic Province, north of Ankara. Gravity, magnetic, topographic, rock type and volcanic eruption center data are the data layers used in the study. All data layers are converted to raster format with a grid spacing of 100 m. The first step in the analysis is the pair-wise analyses of all data layers. For the geophysical data, different layers...
