The purpose of this study was to investigate differences among the percent body fat (%BF) values of Turkish sedentary male and female university students measured by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), skinfold (SKF), ultrasound (US) and hand to hand bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). Two hundred eight Turkish university students (one hundred four males and one hundred four females) aged between 18 to 26 years old participants participated in this study voluntarily. %BF assessment was performed by the SKF, US, BIA and DEXA methods. Differences among DEXA, SKF, US and BIA were examined by applying a series of paired-t test. Multiple regression analyses were conducted to developed regression equations to predict %BF from SKF and US measurements. Results demonstrated that there were significant differences between DEXA and SKF, US, and BIA measurements for males and females. The mean %BF derived from DEXA was significantly (p<.001) greater than those of SKF, US and BIA for males and females. Multiple regression analyses showed that SKF and US measurement of subcutaneous fat at three-sites gave the best prediction to %BF for male and female separately. The multiple correlations using three sites simultaneously for men and women were r=0.92, SEE=2.4 and r=0.91, SEE=2.8 for SKF and r=0.93, SEE=2.3 and r=0.90, SEE=3.0 for US, respectively. In summary, with the new regression equation US appears to be a reliable, portable, and non-invasive tool which can be used by any field investigator on obese or thin individuals. Finally, new regression equations developed do not seem to be superior to those reported using calipers.

Evaluation of body composition using three different methods compared to dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry
Duz, Serkan; Koçak, Mehmet Settar; Korkusuz, Feza (Informa UK Limited, 2009-01-01)
In this study, we compared the simple methods of skinfolds, ultrasound, and bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) against the standard of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) in the assessment of body fat in normoactive Turkish male and female university students. We wished to develop new regression equations to more accurately predict percent body fat from skinfolds and ultrasound for this group of individuals. One hundred and four male (age 22.22.5 years; height 1.770.06 m; mass 74.910.4 kg) and one h...
Associations between anthropometric indicators of adiposity and body fat percentage in normal weight young adults
Söğüt, Mustafa; Varela-Silva, I. (2018-06-01)
The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to determine the associations between various anthropometric adiposity screening indices and body fat percentage estimated by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). A total of 186 (95 male and 91 female) normal weight (body mass index [BMI] = 18.5- 24.9 kg/m2) young adults (mean age= 20.96 ± 2.03 years) were measured on body fat percentage, body height, body mass, waist and hip circumferences. Abdominal volume index, body adiposity index, BMI, body roundness in...
Anthropometric Obesity Indices, Body Fat Percentage, and Grip Strength in Young Adults with different Physical Activity Levels
Söğüt, Mustafa; Altunsoy, Kübra; Clark, Cain; Clemente, Filipe Manuel; DOĞAN, ALİ AHMET (2019-07-01)
The purposes of this study were to determine whether moderately physically active (MPA) and highly physically active (HPA) male (n = 96, age = 22.5 ± 1.7 years) and female (n = 85, age = 21.3 ± 1.6 years) young adults differed in their anthropometric obesity indices (AOIs), body fat percentage (BF%), and muscular strength, and also to examine the associations between physical activity level (PAL) and the abovementioned variables. Participants were measured for body height and weight, BF%, waist and hip circ...
Agreement in estimates of body fat percentage between BIA and BMIbased body fat equations in female young adults
Altunsoy, Kübra; Söğüt, Mustafa; Kaya, Ömer Barış; Clark, Cain Ct (null; 2019-04-15)
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare body fat percentage (BF%) values estimated with various body mass index (BMI)-based BF% equations and bioelectrical impedance (BIA). METHODS: One hundred and eighty-three female young adults (age=20.5±1.8 years, BMI=21.5±3.1kg/m2) participated in the study. Height and body mass were measured to calculate BMI. BF% was determined by BIA and predicted using BMI-based equations (BMIDE; BMIJA; BMIWO; BMIGA). RESULTS: Dependent t-test results revealed that there w...
Some morphological characteristics and neonatal weights of reintroduced gazelle (Gazella subgutturosa) in Turkey
GÜRLER, ŞÜKRÜ; BOZKAYA, FARUK; Ozut, Deniz; Durmus, Mustafa (2015-01-01)
The aim of this study was to determine birth weights, body measurements, and phenotypic correlations in order to characterize the gazelle population raised in Sanliurfa Province, Turkey. For this purpose, body measurements of 93 adult gazelles (54 female, 39 male) and 41 young gazelles (17 female, 24 male) were carried out, and correlations between the measurements were calculated. Additionally, birth weights of 47 newborn gazelle calves (22 female, 25 male) were determined. Mean body weights of adult and y...
