The purpose of the study was to investigate the impact of authentic materials on the development of grammar knowledge, retention and opinions of ninth grade students as an English language learner, in comparison with traditional materials and textbooks or coursebooks. To compare experimental and control groups in terms of achievement, retention and perceptions about the implementation units, a pretest-posttest control group design was carried out. For the purpose of this study, two authentic material-based grammar units were designed and developed and implemented to experimental group students. Three instruments; tests, opinionnaires and unit feedback forms were used. Seventeen (15 and two) teachers and 54 students at TED Ankara College Foundation High School participated in the study. As for the data analysis, the quantifiable data in the pre, post and retention tests were analysed by using descriptive and inferential statistical analysis. To indicate the differences between the experimental and control groups in consideration with achievement and retention, independent samples t-test was conducted. Additionally, opinionnaires and unit feedback forms were analysed to obtain information about the students̕ and teachers̕ opinions about grammar teaching in general and according to the treatment. The results indicated that most of the students were more successful in developing and retaining grammar knowledge while using authentic materials in class.

The contribution of cognitive style and prior knowledge on sixth grade students' knowledge acquisition in polygons in drama based learning environment
Atar Koçkar, Burçin; Ubuz, Behiye; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2010)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the contribution of cognitive style and prior knowledge on 6th grade students' knowledge acquisition in polygons in drama based learning environment. The sample of the study was composed of 112 sixth grade students from a public school in Altındağ district of Ankara. There were 9 drama based lesson plans lasting 16 lesson hours in the study. The data was collected through Group Embedded Figure Test (GEFT), and three types of knowledge tests: Declarative Knowledge ...
A Video case study on TPACK indicators in technology enhanced language teaching classrooms in Turkey
Dönmez, Melek; Baran, Evrim; Gökalp, Gökçe; Department of Educational Sciences (2016)
The purpose of the study is to identify indicators of English language teachers’ technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) observed in language teaching classrooms. The case study examined 5 different cases comprising of 5 different English language teachers as participants and 5 different technology enhanced language teaching classrooms using video study method. The data sources included semi-structured pre- and post-interviews and video recordings of lessons. The qualitative analysis of the vide...
Effects of 5e learning cycle model on understanding of state of matter and solubility concepts
Ceylan, Eren; Geban, Ömer; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2008)
The main purpose of the study was to compare the effectiveness of 5E learning cycle model based instruction and traditionally designed chemistry instruction on 10th grade students’ understanding of state of matter and solubility concepts and attitudes towards chemistry as a school subject; and students’ perceived motivation and perceived use of learning strategies. In this study, 119 tenth grade students from chemistry courses instructed by same teacher from Atatürk Anatolian High School took part. The stud...
Modeling elementary students’ science achievement: the interrelationships among epistemological beliefs, learning approaches, and self-regulated learning strategies
Özkan, Şule; Öztekin, Ceren; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2008)
This study aimed to explore the relationships between elementary students’ epistemological beliefs, learning approaches, self-regulated learning strategies, and their science achievement. In this investigation, a model of the potential associations among these variables was proposed and tested by using structural equation modeling. It was hypothesized that (a) students’ epistemological beliefs would directly influence their learning approaches, self-regulated learning strategies, and science achievement, (b...
Improving 11th grade students' understanding of acid-base concepts by using 5e learning cycle model
Pabuçcu, Aybüke; Geban, Ömer; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2008)
The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of instruction based on 5E learning cycle model over traditionally instruction on students’ understanding of acid-base concepts. Also, the effect of instruction on students’ attitude toward chemistry as a school subject and the effect of gender difference on understanding of acid-base concepts and attitudes toward chemistry were investigated. During the second semester of 2007-2008, 130 eleventh grade students from six classes of two different high ...
