Current activated sludge models are deterministic in character and are constructed by basing on the fundamental biokinetics. However, calibrating these models are extremely time consuming and laborious. An easy-to-calibrate and user friendly computer model, one of the artificial intelligence techniques, Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) were used in this study. These models can be used not only directly as a substitute for deterministic models but also can be plugged into the system as error predictors. Three systems were modeled by using ANN models. Initially, a hypothetical wastewater treatment plant constructed in Simulation of Single-Sludge Processes for Carbon Oxidation, Nitrification & Denitrification (SSSP) program, which is an implementation of Activated Sludge Model No 1 (ASM1), was used as the source of input and output data. The other systems were actual treatment plants, Ankara Central Wastewater Treatment Plant, ACWTP and Iskenderun Wastewater Treatment Plant (IskWTP). A sensitivity analysis was applied for the hypothetical plant for both of the model simulation results obtained by the SSSP program and the developed ANN model. Sensitivity tests carried out by comparing the responses of the two models indicated parallel sensitivities. In hypothetical WWTP modeling, the highest correlation coefficient obtained with ANN model versus SSSP was about 0.980. By using actual data from IskWTP the best fit obtained by the ANN model yielded R value of 0.795 can be considered very high with such a noisy data. Similarly, ACWTP the R value obtained was 0.688, where accuracy of fit is debatable.

Investigation of sodium and potassium ions in relation to bioflocculation of mixed culture microorganisms
Kara, Fadime; Sanin, Faika Dilek; Department of Biotechnology (2007)
Bioflocculation happens naturally and microorganisms aggregate into flocs during wastewater treatment. It is critical to understand the mechanisms of bioflocculation and its impact on the following solid/liquid separation process since seperation by settling is one of the key aspects that determine the efficiency and the overall economy of activated sludge systems. Bioflocculation occurs via extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and cations by creating a matrix to hold various floc components together so...
Extension of spatiotemporal chaos in glow discharge-semiconductor systems
Akhmet, Marat; Rafatov, İsmail (2014-12-01)
Generation of chaos in response systems is discovered numerically through specially designed unidirectional coupling of two glow discharge-semiconductor systems. By utilizing the auxiliary system approach, [H. D. I. Abarbanel, N. F. Rulkov, and M. M. Sushchik, Phys. Rev. E 53, 4528-4535 (1996)] it is verified that the phenomenon is not a chaos synchronization. Simulations demonstrate various aspects of the chaos appearance in both drive and response systems. Chaotic control is through the external circuit e...
Biological and chemical sludge filtration
Yükseler, Hande; Yetiş, Ülkü; Department of Environmental Engineering (2007)
Up to date, sludge filterability has been characterized by the Ruth’s classical filtration theory and quantified by the well-known parameter specific cake resistance (SCR). However, the complexity of the actual phenomenon is clearly underestimated by the classical filtration theory and SCR is often not satisfactory in describing filterability. Although many scientific studies were conducted for a better analysis and understanding of the filtration theory, still a practically applicable solution to replace t...
Analyses of extracellular protein production in Bacillus subtilis - I: Genome-scale metabolic model reconstruction based on updated gene-enzyme-reaction data
KOCABAŞ, PINAR; Çalık, Pınar; ÇALIK GARCİA, GÜZİDE; Ozdamar, Tuncer H. (Elsevier BV, 2017-11-15)
Bacillus subtilis genome-scale model (GEM) reconstruction was stimulated by the recent sequencing and consequent re-annotations. The updated gene-enzyme-reaction data were collected from databases to reconstruct B. subtilis reaction network BsRN-2016 containing 1144 genes linked to 1955 reactions and 1103 metabolites. Thermodynamic analysis was conducted to identify reversibility and directionality of the reactions. By elimination of unconnected-reactions from BsRN-2016, reconstruction process of the first ...
Almost periodicity in chaos
Akhmet, Marat (2018-01-01)
Periodicity plays a significant role in the chaos theory from the beginning since the skeleton of chaos can consist of infinitely many unstable periodic motions. This is true for chaos in the sense of Devaney [1], Li-Yorke [2] and the one obtained through period-doubling cascade [3]. Countable number of periodic orbits exist in any neighborhood of a structurally stable Poincaré homoclinic orbit, which can be considered as a criterion for the presence of complex dynamics [4]-[6]. It was certified by Shilniko...
