The present study consists of two phases. The first phase includes the development of the Turkish Bully Scale to identify bully, victim and bully/victim groups and to describe the incidence of bullying among the elementary school students. The second phase of the study evaluates the effect of the Bullying Management Training Program on reducing bullying behaviours of bully/victim elementary school students. In the development of the Bully Scale a pilot (N=453, sixth grade students) and a main study (N=519, sixth grade students) were conducted to examine the validity evidence and the reliability estimates. Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analyses were used to analyse the validity evidence and the reliability of the Bully Scale, which is used for the selection of the subjects. In the second phase of the study, an experimental 3 x 2 design with one training and two control groups was used to investigate the effectiveness of Bullying Management Training Program. The 19-item Bully Scale including a self-report (N=367) and peer nomination (N= 396) forms were administered to a sample of the 7th grade students. The training program was conducted with the bully/victim group. Contrary to the expectation, the results of repeated measures ANCOVA analyses were not significant, except for the victimization scores of the peer nomination form. The post hoc analyses did not indicate a significant difference for the victimization score between the training and two control groups. The Bullying Management training was not found as an effective technique to reduce bully/victim students̕ bullying and victimization.

Examining the mediating effect of science self-efficacy on the relationship between metavariables and science achievement
Kirbulut, Zubeyde Demet; Kondakçı, Esen (Informa UK Limited, 2019-05-24)
Current studies reveal that meta-level variables are very important in learning; however, little research has been devoted to the role of metaconceptual and meta-affective variables on student achievement. With the aim of filling this gap in the literature, the present study investigated the relationship between metavariables (metaconceptual awareness, metaconceptual regulation, affective awareness, and affective regulation) and science achievement with the mediating effect of science self-efficacy through ...
The Comparative Effects of Prediction/Discussion-Based Learning Cycle, Conceptual Change Text, and Traditional Instructions on Student Understanding of Genetics
Yilmaz, Diba; Öztekin, Ceren; Sungur, Semra (Informa UK Limited, 2011-01-01)
The present study examined the comparative effects of a prediction/discussion-based learning cycle, conceptual change text (CCT), and traditional instructions on students' understanding of genetics concepts. A quasi-experimental research design of the pre-test-post-test non-equivalent control group was adopted. The three intact classes, taught by the same science teacher, were randomly assigned as prediction/discussion-based learning cycle class (N = 30), CCT class (N = 25), and traditional class (N = 26). ...
The effects of problem-based learning method on 9th grade students’ achievement in geometry
Apaçık, Mükerrem; Bulut, Safure; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2009)
The purpose of the study was to determine the effects of problem-based learning (PBL) on 9th grade students’ geometry achievement. The study was conducted in a rural town of Ankara with 44 ninth-grade high school students. The randomized pretest-posttest control group design was used. The experimental group was instructed with hybrid PBL and the control group was instructed with traditional teaching methods. The treatment was given for 4 hours every week for a total of six weeks. Geometry Achievement Test (...
The contribution of cognitive and metacognitive strategy use to seventh grade students' science achievement
Akyol, Gülsüm; Öztekin, Ceren; Department of Educational Sciences (2009)
The purposes of the study were to examine the differences in the level of students’ cognitive and metacognitive strategy use and to investigate the contribution of cognitive and metacognitive strategy use (rehearsal, elaboration, organization, critical thinking, and metacognitive self-regulation) to 7th grade students’ science achievement. This study also interested in exploring the relationships between students’ background characteristics (gender, prior knowledge, socioeconomic status) and the variables i...
