The main objective of this thesis is to review the problems of stone facades according to the performance criteria determined with codes and standards and to propose solutions for proper application. In this process the codes, standards, other documents and the knowledge of the researcher all served to determine the inadequacies present in this field. The thesis also aims at clarifying the terminolgy confusion related to stone cladding and stone curtain wall.

Production of space in the post earthquake region: three cases from Düzce
Demirel, Sinem; Sargın, Güven Arif; Department of Architecture (2005)
This thesis is about the processes and attitudes behind building production as it is about architecture as such, and it aims at understanding architecture̕s critical capacity and its relation to wider society. In this context, the differing attitudes and orientations in the construction of the residential environments in Düzce after the two unsettling earthquakes that took place in 1999 are believed to provide a study field, where the relationship between architecture and different economic, political and c...
Assessing thermal performance of office building envelopes : a case study on energy efficiency
Sürmeli, Ayşe Neşen; Elias Özkan, Soofia Tahira; Department of Building Science in Architecture (2004)
In this study, the energy conservation potential of selected retrofitting interventions on an office building were investigated, on the basis of which some rational strategies for the improvement of building envelopes in terms of energy, environment and comfort design were proposed. Examined were various measures on envelope constructions that can be retrofitted to existing buildings. By using simulation techniques, the effectiveness of such measures in reducing energy consumption and environmental threat w...
Assessing thermal comfort conditions: a case Study on the METU Faculty of Architecture building; the case of ODTÜKENT
Çakır, Çağrı; Elias Özkan, Soofia Tahira; Department of Building Science in Architecture (2006)
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of environmental design parameters on thermal comfort conditions in the METU Faculty of Architecture Building located in Ankara. The building had some problems in terms of indoor climatic conditions, both in winter and in summer. It was evident that some design parameters caused this undesirable situation. The study therefore focused on understanding and evaluating the effects of design-dependent elements such as thermal mass, the size and orientation of win...
Performative architecture as a guideline for transformation of the defence line of Amsterdam
Albayrak, Canan; Baykan, Ahmet Can; Department of Architecture (2011)
The main topic that is researched in this study is: what performative architecture is and its role in the design process and product. In the scope of performative architecture the aim is to focus what a building does rather than what it is and the fact that architecture should have the capability of being adaptable to changing time, conditions and environment. A design problem is taken under consideration and designed from the scope of performative architecture. The design problem is the transformation of t...
