In this study, an urban growth model is used to simulate the urban growth in 2025 in the Antalya Metropolitan Area. It is the fastest growing metropolis in Turkey with a population growth of 41,79‰, although Turkey’s growth is 18,28‰ for the last decade. An Urban Growth Model (SLEUTH, Version 3.0) is calibrated with cartographic data. The prediction is based on the archived data trends of the years of the 1987, 1996, and 2002 images, which are extracted from Landsat Thematic Mapper and Enhanced Thematic Mapper satellite images and the aerial photographs acquired in 1992 and the data are prepared to insert them as input into the model. The urban extent is obtained through supervised classification of the satellite images and visual interpretation of aerial photographs. The model calibration, where a predetermined order of stepping through the “coefficient space” is used is performed in order to determine the best fit values for the five growth control parameters including the coefficients of diffusion, breed and spread, slope and road gravity with the historical urban extent data. The development trend in Antalya is simulated by slowing down growth by taking into consideration the road development and environmental protection. After the simulation for a period of 23 years, 9824 ha increased in urban areas is obtained for 2025.

Evaluating urban growth trends by using SLEUTH model:a case study in Adana
Çapan, Hüseyi; Akyürek, Sevda Zuhal; Department of Geodetic and Geographical Information Technologies (2019)
In this study, various urban growth scenarios are simulated for Adana city by using SLEUTH urban growth model. In addition, the impact of the planned road in 2020 was investigated. The results of this study were compared with other SLEUTH model applications using a SLEUTH-specific comparison method. SLEUTH is a cellular automata simulation model developed for urban growth modelling. It is written in the C language and has an open source library. Since its first occurrence as an urban growth model, SLEUTH mo...
Experimental testing of hot mix asphalt mixture made of recycled aggregates
Rafi, Muhammad Masood; Qadir, Adnan; Siddiqui, Salman Hameed (2011-12-01)
The migration of population towards big cities generates rapid construction activities. These activities not only put pressure on natural resources but also produce construction, renovation and demolitionwaste. There is an urgent need to find out ways to handle this waste owing to growing environmental concerns. This can reduce pressure on natural resources as well. This paper presents the results of experimental studies which were carried out on hot mix asphalt mixture samples. These samples were manufactu...
Developing multi-objective linear programming approaches for traffic signal optimization
Coşkun, Mustafa Murat; Toroslu, İsmail Hakkı; Şener, Cevat; Department of Computer Engineering (2021-7)
In many countries and metropolitan cities, traffic congestion, mainly caused by population growth and the increase in urbanization, has reached a significant level and has become a major problem for residents and decision-makers. Today, although infrastructural strategies such as the construction of underpasses and road widening to alleviate traffic congestion are applied in urban networks, the strategies can also be quite costly and environmentally damaging. Therefore, decision makers allocate large bu...
Intervening to urban decline by urban design tools in divided cities: Lefkoşa
Özdemir, Sıla; Yetişkul Şenbil, Emine; Department of City and Regional Planning (2014)
Urban decline in walled cities has been condemned to be a significant phenomenon in different fields as political economy, urban design, city planning and urban sociology. The aim of the study is to determine the association between physical urban space and social urban space in declined walled cities and handle the fact of urban decline in a two dimensional point of view by examining both the social space and physical space as well as the part and the whole in an integrated approach. The integration of soc...
Analysis of urban morphology in squatter transformation areas
Şahin, Mustafa Raşit; Yetişkul Şenbil, Emine; Department of City and Regional Planning (2014)
The impacts and results of urban transformation has been discussed as an important issue in developing countries by different disciplines as political economy, urban design, city planning and urban sociology. Urban transformation projects in Turkey are mainly criticized since the main focus is about physical transformation. In this context, the aim of the study is to determine what quality of space is produced by urban transformation projects in Turkey. Urban transformation projects creates a different scal...
