This thesis interrogates the interrelation between architecture and science fiction cinema to understand the fictional and representative power of architecture. Since cinema embraces both physical and representative aspects of architecture it is convenient to carry out the research through the mediation of cinema. To accomplish this goal science fiction genre is particularly chosen where architectural image can break its commonly acknowledged facet and can reconstruct to participate in the narrative. The architectural image is intended to be interpreted through the concept of city and architectural components in science fiction cinema. To create a mutual language, a world wide known city New York City is selected as the case study subject; that the research is developed upon. Initially the study is based on the discussion over cinema architecture relationship from an architect’s point of view. Subsequently architectural image in architecture and cinema is studied under several categories. Twenty four science fiction movies with various plots are chosen where all the movies are either located in New York City or in a fictional city inspired by it. By analyzing these movies through architectural concepts it is aimed to gain understanding to key points in architectural design.

Transformation of architectural space with the aid of artistic production
Özden, Başak; Savaş Sargın, Ayşen; Department of Architecture (2011)
The goal of this thesis is to study the transformation of architectural space with the aid of artistic production. By questioning architectural production as a non-static process open to alteration and intervention, this condition is claimed to enlarge the frontiers of architecture in terms of interdisciplinary contributions and new design methods. Inspired by the course ARCH 524, conducted by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayşen Savaş in the METU Department of Architecture, this study aims to understand the possible way...
Reconsidering architectural program within the framework of conjectures and refutations: the design studies journal
Özten, Ülkü; Özkar, Mine; Department of Architecture (2014)
The discussion of program in the field of history and theory of the Modern Movement in architecture enters a new period in the 1960s and 70s under the influence of the strong embodiment of science and technology in the field of design research. Beginning with this period, the idea of program arises both in a series of generations parallel to a specialized, sophisticated understanding of design and as an autonomous professional area of study. While the concept was being largely developed under the influence ...
Analysis of the limits of representation of architectural photographic images in periodicals
Bakht, Nazlı; Güzer, Celal Abdi; Department of Architecture (2007)
This study aims to analyze the limits of representation of architectural photographic images in periodicals within architectural media that shape today’s architectural production. This aim is accomplished in three sections; “examining the power of image in architecture”; “examining architectural media” and “examining the periodicals’ attitudes towards using architectural photography”. A case study is done to uncover the relationship between the photograph and the medium that it takes place on and determine ...
Physical and virtual : transformation of the architectural model
Arpak, Aslı; Mennan, Zeynep; Department of Architecture (2008)
Today the most prosperous interface of architectural design and representation has become the architectural model both in its digital and physical forms. There has been a shift in the design medium from the physical modeling processes to computer-aided design, by way of which the computational design methods have established a much more dynamic, complex, and continual design. In this process, the digital design model now accompanies the whole design as a single entity, contrary to conventional analog modeli...
Complexity management and mutability in architectural form conception: form-blindness and softform
Kızılcan, Egemen Berker; Mennan, Zeynep; Department of Architecture (2015)
Expressions in architecture, as modes of conveying information, have the power to shape perception and thinking, as well as architectural production. Architectural conception is today induced by custom information models with the advent of technologies and methodologies associated with the computational paradigm and therefore are capable of inhabiting complex orders that arise from a multiplicity of concerns. Architecture is no longer constituted by the fixity of a single instance of form, instead possibili...
