When human constructs the physical surrounding, a psychological environment of meanings is being created, accompanying the world of shapes and masses. Interventions into built environment affect the meanings extracted from the composition of the physical setting and the response of people to design strategies reveals the importance of them. The entrance spine of a city is important in creating an image of the city in the minds of the observers, and the protocol highway of Ankara introduces the city to other countries’ leaders and visitors. So any intervention into this highway will affect the symbolic image formed. As such, attaching claddings onto visible façades of buildings in terms of “beautification” changes the appearance of the streetscape, and Municipality’s approach to façade improvement does not heed the prestige of this corridor; being an application rather than a well-advised project. This thesis aims to study the quality of the streetscape under the principles of design in terms of objective and subjective dimensions with respect to the physical characteristics of the setting and people’s interpretations from it, and the objective of this study is to question the success of this intervention with regard to solutions to improve the quality of the streetscape. To this end evaluative analyses are studied in the second chapter and the third chapter introduces a matrix of design principles. According to these evaluations, most design concerns are being underestimated, resulting in the monotony of the streetscape but the streetscape appears to be visually more ordered compared to the past.

The role of institutions in promoting public interest within the context of cultural and natural heritage conservation: the case of Gökova
Özdemir, Gizem Ergüç; Kayasü, Serap; Department of City and Regional Planning (2009)
This thesis discusses the role of institutions in promoting public interest within the context of cultural and natural heritage conservation. Due to the fact that the concept of public interest is controversial and may differ from one context to another, and that there are numerous institutions, the role of institutions in public interest promoting process limited to the context of conservation. A large number of public institutions develop policies that have significant implications for the conservation of...
Human interventions on wetlands and their long term impacts on human well-being a study of Kızılırmak Delta case, Samsun, Turkey
Gürçay, Melih; Eraydın, Ayda; Department of City and Regional Planning (2009)
Acknowledging the necessity of a detailed understanding of the dynamics and contributions of wetlands in decision making processes, this research aims to identify the trade-offs between human interventions and human well-being in wetlands. Being one of the thirteen Ramsar Sites of Turkey and providing various ecosystem functions, Kızılırmak Delta was determined as the case study area of the research. Following the literature review on wetlands and their valuation, an assessment framework was developed for a...
Different definitions of "periphery" and different peripheries in the EU
Özdemir, Esin; Eraydın, Ayda; Department of City and Regional Planning (2005)
The definition of the periphery can be made in in different ways, based on the concepts emphisized in different theoretical discussions. Correspondingly, different peripheries appear in Europe from the perspectives of these different definitions. The thesis puts forward five different definitions of the periphery; definition of the periphery based on income and income growth differentials; definition of the periphery by using economic structure, employment and population potentials; definition of the periph...
Building a legible city : how far planning is succesful in Ankara
Eraydın, Zeynep; Barlas, Mehmet Adnan; Urban Design in City and Regional Planning Department (2007)
Human environment perceptual relationships have significant effects on human psychology in urban spaces. The concepts of urban legibility and imageability concentrate on these relationships and define components to create livable places by organizing the physical structure. However, determining legibility components is not sufficient in order to define whether a place legible or not. This thesis explores Gestalt laws of perception can be used to re-define the relationships among legibility components by set...
The influence of design considerations of metro stations in the context of city identity: the case of ankaray and ankara metro
Güneş, Serkan; Barlas, Mehmet Adnan; Department of City and Regional Planning (2007)
The theoretical structure of the study is composed of understanding the life cycle of metro system classified in three evolutionary phases. These process definitions respectively start with demand related to metro, continue with the acceptance of metro as the preferential alternative by inhabitants and end with the subway that embedded as an important reason that build city identity. Phases will be studied through its motives and will be analyzed through physical design considerations. The reason of the pre...
