In distance education, lack of face-to-face communication prevents instructors from observing students’ activities efficiently, especially in crowded sessions, and consequently they fail to effectively assess the performance of distant learners. On the other hand, in spite of being physically distant, instructor should monitor students’ activities and assess their performance effectively so that learners can be informed as quickly as possible of how well they are doing. This thesis aims to develop an e-learning tool for distance education that integrates asynchronous and synchronous learning environments to offer an enriched e-learning platform. The tool enables instructor to keep track of students’ activities, assesses learners’ participation during online synchronous sessions dynamically, and provides asynchronous access to assessment data after the lectures. In this way, it is aimed to monitor performance of distant learners by the instructor more efficiently.

Problem-based learning approach present several advantages such as improving students’ engagement in learning and fostering their higher-order thinking skills. Although there is a plethora of research regarding implementation of problem-based learning in classrooms, its design and application process for web-based environments need further investigation because of independent nature of online settings. This study developed a problem-based online learning environment based on constructivist learning design m...
Cooperative learning instruction for conceptual change in the concepts of chemical kinetics
TAŞTAN KIRIK, ÖZGECAN; Boz, Yezdan (2012-01-01)
Learning is a social event and so the students need learning environments that enable them to work with their peers so that they can learn through their interactions. This study discusses the effectiveness of cooperative learning compared to traditional instruction in terms of students' motivation and understanding of chemical kinetics in a high school chemistry course. Participants were 110 eleventh grade students from two different schools. The researchers administered the Reaction Rate Concept Test to me...
Hypermedia as a cognitive tool: Student teachers' experiences in learning by doing
Yıldırım, Zahide (2005-04-01)
This study investigates student teachers' opinions about learning "instructional technology and material preparation" subjects in a hypermedia-based constructivist learning context. A qualitative case study design was employed. The students of one classroom were the focus of an in-depth investigation by means of interviews, which were designed to elicit these students' perceptions concerning the use of hypermedia as a cognitive tool in the learning process. The study sample consisted of twenty-eight second-...
E-portfolio assessment in an online English language course
Baturay, Meltem Huri; Daloğlu, Ayşegül (2010-01-01)
Many teachers have the tendency to look at only the standardized test scores of their students while ignoring how or why various dimensions of language proficiency has improved or not improved. Portfolio, however, reveals a clear picture of the student's growth and development. This study reflects that traditional approaches to assessment of student progress in EFL writing lack indicators of students' development of the skill and aims to answer the following questions: what are the learning gains of student...
