In this study, evaluation of Kosovo-Artana Concentrator tailings with flotation and leaching method is aimed. The minerological analysis of sample showed that sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite and their oxidised forms are the main ore minerals in the sample, while pyrite, illite, quartz, calcite and gypsum are the gangue minerals. The metal contents of the sample are 1.2% Zn, 0.75% Pb, and 0.06% Cu. Flotation tests to produce bulk concentrate of copper-lead and lead-zinc were unsatisfactory. The recovery of the zinc with H2SO4 leaching were conducted both at room temperature and at elevated temperature. The effects of various parameters such as leaching duration, concentration of H2SO4, pulp density and temperature on the zinc metal recovery were examined. The maximum extraction of zinc was 80% and 89% at room temperature and at 80 °C respectively for 120 minutes leaching period.

Characterization of maghemite thin films prepared by sol-gel processing
Karakuşçu, Aylin; Özenbaş, Ahmet Macit; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2006)
In this study, maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) thin films were prepared by chemical solution deposition on glass and quartz substrates. The solution was prepared by using 0.3 M iron (III) nitrate [Fe(NO3)3 - 9H2O] as precursor and dissolved in a mixture of 2-methoxyethanol and acetylacetone in a molar ratio of 20:2, by stirring the solution at RT for 2 hours. Substrates were prepared by either piranha etching method or ultrasonic cleaning method. The solution was spin coated on glass and quartz substrates at 1400 and 4...
Investigation and development of possible leaching processes for recovery of zinc and lead from çinkur leach residues
Sunkar, Ahmet Semih; Topkaya, Yavuz Ali; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2005)
The major aim of this study was to investigate various leaching methods for the recovery of zinc and lead from blended neutral leach residues of Çinkur having a composition of 12.59 % Zn, 15.21 % Pb, 6.45 % Fe, 0.054 % Cd. Initially water leaching tests were performed at various conditions of leaching temperature, reaction time and particle size. The optimized conditions for water leaching were found to be 2 h, 95?C and 250 g/l pulp density with a final pH of 5.9. However, the zinc recovery value of 10.26 %...
Synthesis and characterization of nickel based bulk amkorphous alloys
Arslan, Hülya; Mekhrabov, Amdulla O.; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2004)
The aim of this study is to synthesize and characterize new bulk amorphous alloys in the Ni- based systems. Theoretical studies on the basis of semi-empirical rules and the electronic theory of alloys in pseudopotential approximation has been provided in order to predict the impurity elements that will lead to an increase in the glass forming ability of Ni-based alloy systems. Glass forming ability of ten different compositions of alloys of Ni-Nb, Ni-Fe, Ni-B, Ni-Hf and Ni-Cr was simulated by using FORTRAN ...
High temperature corrosion of steels used in petroleum refinery heaters
Sultan, Abdelrahman; Karakaya, İshak; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2005)
The oxidation of three different steels used in the construction of petroleum refineryheaters was investigated by using thermogravimetric analysis technique (TGA). C-5,P-11, and P-22 steel samples were tested in two different oxidizing environments; air and CO2+N2+H2O (that simulates the combustion products of natural gas) at two different temperatures; 450oC and 500oC. In air oxidation P-22 had the best oxidation resistance among the three steels at two temperatures. In CO2+N2+H2O environment,C-5 possessed...
Optimization of conditions in sulfuric acid leaching of Turkish chromite concentrates
Ustaoğlu, Emre; Geveci, Ahmet; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2006)
In this thesis work, a high grade chromite concentrate obtained from Pınarbaşı, Kayseri region of Turkey was reacted with sulfuric acid solution to determine the optimum conditions of leaching of chromite ores. Conventional methods for producing chromium are still valid in industry. The main process in production includes soda melting and taking it into solution in the form of chemical compounds such as sodium dichromate. Three and six valence states of chromium have importance in production. Trivalent chro...
