The new changes such as developments in transportation and communication technology, globalization of markets, intensification of flow of information, ideas and innovations since the 1980s have helped to increase the interaction between urban and rural and this process have had very important impact on the resemblance process of rural areas to urban areas with some characteristics, vice versa. Therefore the process have had an effect on the blurring strict distinction between urban and rural in worldwide. The new rurality approach has been main approach in the thesis that has tried to explain the new features of rural areas. It has focused on what has been happenning in rural areas and drawn attention to changes in rural areas which was previously ignored or overemphasized. The approach took five main changing features of rural areas as central focus which were non-farm activities, role of women, entrepreneurship, in-migration, division of labour and also urban-rural interaction. Therefore, the observed changes caused to draw attention to the question of is rural still the opposite of urban? In this respect, the effects of the increased relationships between urban and rural on rural areas in terms of getting new characteristics that new rurality approach explained were investigated by handling two case studies; Gedelek and Kuşçuali Villages in Turkey.

Changing Istanbul City Region Dynamics: Re-regulations to Challenge the Consequences of Uneven Development and Inequality
Eraydın, Ayda (2011-01-01)
In this paper, it is claimed that the dynamics that enabled the emergence of city regions as new places of globalization brought about significant changes and restructuring in these areas in the early years of neo-liberal policies. Subsequently, from the 1990s onwards a new neo-liberalist agenda, in reply to the problems of the early period of globalization, defined new relations and new dynamics for city regions. The aim of this paper, with the help of earlier Istanbul case studies, is to discuss the chang...
The changing morphology of urban greenways, Ankara, 1923-1960
Burat, Sinan; Aktüre, Sevgi; Department of City and Regional Planning (2008)
Despite the abundance of descriptive studies on the urban development plans of Ankara, analytical studies on specific features of these plans, especially on implementation and modification processes are scarce. This study examines the green space structure brought in Jansen’s 1932 development plan of Ankara, the way it was implemented and the modifications that a component of this structure was subject to. The 1932 Jansen plan is a holistic and comprehensive plan that contained a conceptual green space stru...

Marconcini, Mattia; Esch, Thomas; Chrysoulakis, Nektarios; Düzgün, Hafize Şebnem; Tal, Abraham; Feigenwinter, Christian; Parlow, Eberhard (2013-07-26)
The increasing availability of Earth Observation (EO) technologies has provided new opportunities for a wide range of urban applications, such as mapping and monitoring of the urban environment, socio-economic estimations, characterization of urban climate, analysis of regional and global impacts and urban security and emergency preparedness. However, a gap exists between the research-focused results offered by the urban EO community and the application of these data and products by urban planners and decis...

A research on resilience of urban public spaces: the case of Güvenpark, Ankara
Tümer Ergün, Ece; Büyükcivelek, Ahmet Burak; Department of City Planning (2020-10-23)
Cities are constantly changing and developing within the framework of social, economic, technological and political contexts. Therefore, it is increasingly common to accept cities as dynamic and complex systems instead of predictable systems. The strong relationship between urban planning and resilience has found itself in many different areas in the literature, for example, flexible planning strategies have been proposed in the urban planning literature to combat chaotic processes and sudden changes. Altho...
